North Carolina

North Carolina (ⁱ/ˌnɔːrθ kærəˈlaɪnə/) is a state in the southeastern region of the United States. The state borders South Carolina and Georgia to the south, Tennessee to the west, Virginia to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. North Carolina is the 28th most extensive and the 9th most populous of the 50 United States. North Carolina is known as the Tar Heel State and the Old North State.

North Carolina is composed of 100 counties. Its two largest metropolitan areas are among the top ten fastest-growing in the country: its capital, Raleigh, and its largest city, Charlotte. In the past five decades, North Carolina's economy has undergone a transition from reliance upon tobacco, textiles, and furniture-making to a more diversified economy with engineering, energy, biotechnology, and finance sectors.

North Carolina has a wide range of elevations, from sea level on the coast to 6,684 feet (2,037 m) at Mount Mitchell, the highest point in North America east of the Mississippi River. The climate of the coastal plains is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the state falls in the humid subtropical climate zone. More than 300 miles (500 km) from the coast, the western, mountainous part of the state has a subtropical highland climate.

North Carolina wine

North Carolina wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Wine has been produced in the area since the early days of European colonization in the 17th century. Wine growers in North Carolina were the first to cultivate a native American grape variety, the Scuppernong, which produces a sweet wine, examples of which are still being made in the state. Most wine produced in North Carolina since the year 2000 is made from Vitis vinifera grape varieties, although French hybrid and Vitis labrusca varieties remain common.

Wine industry

North Carolina ranks tenth in both grape and wine production in the United States. The state's wine industry continues to expand, and today is one of the United States’ five most visited state destinations for wine and culinary tourism. In 2007, North Carolina contained 55 wineries and 350 vineyards. By 2011, this had grown to more than 100 wineries and more than 400 vineyards.

Advanced Placement courses offered by the school include Calculus AB, Statistics, Biology, US History, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, and World History, among others. Through North Carolina Virtual Public Schools, Richlands students can take courses that are not offered at their school. Students may also participate in a variety of vocational programs at Coastal Carolina Community College.

RHS offers thirteen honors classes. These honors classes include courses in all four years of English, in Geometry and Precalculus, in Biology and Earth Science, and also in World History, American History, and Civics and Economics.

The 2006-2007 School Report Card for Richlands High School designates it as a School of Progress, with 60 to 80% of the students on grade level. The school also met all thirteen of its designated adequate yearly progress (AYP) goals. The average SAT score was 1025, eight points above the national average, with a 40% participation rate. The school ranks below the school district average in the technology and resources available to students, with fewer computers and books available per student and a library with much older books on average. Only 84% of the teaching staff is fully licensed (with the State average at 89%). Also, a higher-than-average percentage of teachers at Richlands High School have more than ten years of teaching experience. (54% have ten years or more: State average 53%)

The Richlands Blue Tornados have won two different VHSL AA State Championships and numerous Regional and District Championships in a variety of sports.

The Richlands Football team had posted an outstanding 33 game regular season win streak lasting from the 2004 season to the '07 season and 3 state championship game appearances. With 2 undefeated regular seasons in that time period, along with the "Perfect Storm" of 14-0 in the 2006 campaign culminating in a state championship, they have been marked with much recent success.
