Richard Kelly (director)

James Richard Kelly (born March 28, 1975), better known as Richard Kelly, is an American film director and writer, known for writing and directing the cult classic Donnie Darko in 2001.

Early life

Kelly was born James Richard Kelly in Newport News, Virginia, the son of Lane and Ennis Kelly. He grew up in Midlothian, Virginia, where he attended Midlothian High School and graduated in 1993. When he was a child, his father worked for NASA on the Mars Viking Lander program. He won a scholarship to the University of Southern California to study at the USC School of Cinema-Television where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He made two short films at USC, The Goodbye Place and Visceral Matter, before graduating in 1997.

Film career

Donnie Darko was his first feature and was nominated for 21 small awards, winning 11 of them, including a nomination for a Saturn Award. The film later ended up #2 on Empire magazine's list of 50 greatest independent films of all time, behind Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs.

Richard Kelly (Tuam Herald)

Richard Kelly (fl. 1837) was the Irish founder of the Tuam Herald.

Kelly was a native of Loughrea and launched The Tuam Herald newspaper on 13 May 1837. It has been in continuous publication ever since. He was the proprietor and editor until succeeded by his son, Jasper, who was a journalist. Jasper died in his thirties, leaving a young family. Richard resumed management of the paper on behalf of his grandchildren.

Richard Kelly (British Army officer)

Lieutenant-General Sir Richard Denis Kelly KCB (9 March 1815 – 1897) was a British Army officer who became General Officer Commanding Eastern District.

Military career

Kelly was commissioned into the 49th (Royal Berkshire) Regiment of Foot in 1834. He became commanding officer of 34th (Cumberland) Regiment of Foot and, in that capacity, was wounded and taken prisoner at the Siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. He also took part in the Siege of Cawnpore in June 1857, the Siege of Lucknow in Autumn 1857 and the relief of Azimghur in April 1858 during the Indian Rebellion. He went on to be General Officer Commanding Cork District in April 1874 and General Officer Commanding Eastern District in April 1877.

He was also colonel of the Royal Irish Regiment. He was buried at St Peter's Churchyard in Earley, Berkshire.
