Richard Douglas Lane

Richard Lane (1926–2002) was an American scholar, author, collector, and dealer of Japanese art. He lived in Japan for much of his life, and had a long association with the Honolulu Museum of Art in Hawaii, which now holds his vast art collection.

Life

Lane was born in Kissimmee, Florida. After graduating from high school in 1944, during World War II, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. In the Marines he trained as a Japanese translator, and served in Japan during the war. He later received a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii in Japanese and Chinese literature, and continued his studies at Columbia University, where he earned a master's degree and a Ph.D in 18th-century Japanese literature. In 1957, he moved to Japan, where he lived for the rest of his life.

Lane was never on a university faculty, but supported himself as an author, dealer and consultant. He was a visiting research associate at the Honolulu Museum of Art from 1957 to 1971, during which time he helped catalog the James A. Michener collection of Japanese prints. In 1960 he married physician Chiyeko Okawa; they remained married until her death in 1999. In 2002, he died intestate and without heirs in Kyoto, Japan, and the Honolulu Museum of Art purchased his collection from the Japanese judicial authorities. The Lane Collection consisted of nearly 20,000 paintings, prints and books.

Richard Douglas (civil servant)

Richard Philip Douglas, CB (born 20 November 1956 in York, North Yorkshire), is a senior civil servant who currently holds the position of Director General of Finance for the Department of Health in the United Kingdom.

Pre-Civil Service

Richard attended Archbishop Holgate's School in York, and after completing his A-levels, he studied for a BA in English Literature at the University of Hull. After graduating, he married in 1978 and embarked upon his civil service career the same year.

Civil Service Career

Richard started his career in public sector finance with the National Audit Office (NAO) where he qualified as an accountant (CIPFA) in 1983. In his time with the NAO he worked in most areas of central government - health, employment, home affairs, defence and agriculture.

He is currently in his third spell with the Department following a secondment from the NAO between 1990 and 1992 and three years as Deputy Director of Finance from 1996. Immediately prior to his return he was Finance Director for National Savings.

Richard Douglas (footballer)

Richard Joseph Edwin Douglas (born 6 February 1987) is a professional Australian rules football player who plays for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was drafted by Adelaide with pick #16 in the 2005 National Draft.

AFL career

After impressing for Glenelg in the SANFL, Douglas made his AFL debut in round 21 of 2006, his first season, against Port Adelaide. He played two further games for the season, including a Qualifying Final. Douglas established himself in the side over the next two years, playing 13 games in 2007 and 22 of a possible 23 games in 2008.

In June 2009, in the lead-up to Adelaide's clash with North Melbourne, Douglas had a scare when he began displaying symptoms consistent with the swine influenza pandemic, and was quarantined. On the night before the match, the test for Swine Flu came back negative; however, he did not play in the match, which Adelaide won comfortably. He returned to play the next match, although he was dropped from the side a few weeks later against Fremantle. He played 18 games in 2009 in total.
