"Rhodopis" (Greek: Ροδώπις) is an ancient tale about a Greek courtesan who marries the king of Egypt. The story was first recorded by the Greek historian Strabo in the 1st century BC and is considered the earliest known variant of the "Cinderella" story. The origins of the fairy-tale figure may be traced back to the 6th-century BC hetaera Rhodopis.
Rhodopis, a courtesan, was bathing. An eagle snatched one of her shoes from her maid, carried it to the sunset, and dropped it into the lap of the king (named Psammetichus in Aelian). The king searched for the owner of the shoe. He found Rhodopis in Naucratis and married her.
The Greek geographer Strabo (died c. 24 AD) first recorded the tale of the Greco-Egyptian girl Rhodopis in his Geographica. This passage is considered to be the earliest variant of the Cinderella story. Another account of Rhodopis has survived in Aelian's (died c. 235 AD) writings, showing that the Cinderella theme remained known throughout antiquity.
Rhodopis (Greek: ροδωπις, real name possibly Doricha) was a celebrated 6th-century BCE Greek hetaera, of Thracian origin. She is one of only two hetaerae mentioned by name in Herodotus' discussion of the profession (the other is the somewhat later Archidike).
According to Herodotus, she was a fellow-slave of the fable teller Aesop, with whom in one version of her story she had a secret love affair; both of them belonged to the Samian, Iadmon. She afterwards became the property of Xanthes, another Samian, who took her to Naucratis in Egypt, during the reign of Amasis II, where she continued to work as an hetaera for the benefit of her master. This led to her meeting Charaxus, brother of the poet Sappho, who had gone to Naucratis as a merchant. Charaxus fell in love with her, and ransomed her from slavery with a large sum of money. Sappho later wrote a poem accusing Rhodopis of robbing Charaxus of his property.
Rhodopis continued to live at Naucratis after her liberation from slavery, and tithed a tenth part of her income to the temple at Delphi, where ten iron spits were dedicated in her name; these spits were seen by Herodotus.
The oasis hummingbird (Rhodopis vesper) is a species of hummingbird in the Trochilidae family. It is found in coastal regions of Peru in a 100–200 km wide strip that extends the length of Peru's coastline, about 3000 km. It is also found in an adjacent population in Chile; a second disjunct population in coastal Chile exists 2000 km to the south, in a 75 by 200 km coastal strip.
The oasis hummingbird's natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, and subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland.
The Oasis hummingbird is a mid-sized hummingbird with an average length of 13-13.5 cm for an adult male and 11-11.5 cm for an adult female. They have an olive green colored back and grey to white colored breast with a distinctive cinnamon colored rump. They have a long, decurved, black bill. They are sexually dimorphic with males having a brightly iridescent gorget that is blue to red in color and a long forked tail. Females have much shorter tail feathers and no iridescent gorget.
