Repeater (album)

Repeater is the full-length debut studio album by the American post-hardcore band Fugazi. It was released on April 19, 1990, as Repeater on LP, and in May 1990 on CD bundled with the 3 Songs EP as Repeater + 3 Songs. It was recorded at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Virginia, and produced and engineered by Don Zientara and Ted Niceley.

Repeater is often regarded as a definitive album for the band and a landmark of rock music, it has been described as an "angrier American update of Gang of Four's Solid Gold", it has also been noted for its complex guitar and rhythm section interplays. It is included in the book 1000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die.

Background

By 1989 Fugazi had made the transition into jamming on and writing new material as a band as opposed to playing songs composed solely by singer/guitarist Ian MacKaye. After the completion of several lengthy U.S. and European tours in support of the group's previous EPs, they began to work on new material as well as refining songs that they had already been performing live, such as "Merchandise" and "Turnover" the latter of which was originally titled "NSA".

! is an album by The Dismemberment Plan. It was released on October 2, 1995, on DeSoto Records. The band's original drummer, Steve Cummings, played on this album but left shortly after its release.

Album

Albums of recorded music were developed in the early 20th century, first as books of individual 78rpm records, then from 1948 as vinyl LP records played at 33 ¹⁄₃ rpm. Vinyl LPs are still issued, though in the 21st century albums sales have mostly focused on compact disc (CD) and MP3 formats. The audio cassette was a format used in the late 1970s through to the 1990s alongside vinyl.

An album may be recorded in a recording studio (fixed or mobile), in a concert venue, at home, in the field, or a mix of places. Recording may take a few hours to several years to complete, usually in several takes with different parts recorded separately, and then brought or "mixed" together. Recordings that are done in one take without overdubbing are termed "live", even when done in a studio. Studios are built to absorb sound, eliminating reverberation, so as to assist in mixing different takes; other locations, such as concert venues and some "live rooms", allow for reverberation, which creates a "live" sound. The majority of studio recordings contain an abundance of editing, sound effects, voice adjustments, etc. With modern recording technology, musicians can be recorded in separate rooms or at separate times while listening to the other parts using headphones; with each part recorded as a separate track.

Repeating rifle

A repeating rifle is a single barreled rifle containing multiple rounds of ammunition. These rounds are loaded from a magazine by means of a manual or automatic mechanism, and the action that reloads the rifle also typically recocks the firing action. The term repeating rifle is most often applied to weapons in which the next cartridge is loaded by a manual action, as opposed to semi-automatic rifles, in which the force of one shot is used to load the next.

Repeating rifles were a significant advance over the preceding breech loaded single-shot rifles when used for military combat, as they allowed a much greater rate of fire. Repeating rifles saw use in the American Civil War during the early 1860s, and the first repeating air rifle to see military service was the Windbüchse Rifle.

Manual mechanism

Revolver action

While some early long guns were made using the revolver mechanism popular in hand guns, these did not have longevity in the marketplace. Although the revolver mechanism was fine for pistols, it posed a problem with long guns: without special sealing details, the cylinder produces a gas discharge close to the face when the weapon is fired from the shoulder, as was a common procedure.

Biography

The Main Frame days (2001-2004)

The Main Frame was a Long Beach darkwave band formed in 2001 with Steve Krolikowski (vocals and guitar) and Rob Wallace (keyboard). After recording a full-length album, Curse of Evolution (2003) and an unreleased EP, the band decided to dissolve.

Formation of Repeater (2005)

Krolikowski and Wallace continued to work on music together, eventually forming Repeater with the general goal of achieving a modern sound, inspired by bands such as The Chameleons, Mew, Joy Division, The Cure and New Order while taking pieces of all of the best influences from the 1980s and 1990s. They eventually added new members into the fold, including Alex Forsythe (guitar) and Matt Hanief (drums).

Since the formation of the band, Repeater has played over 130 shows, including SXSW. Repeater released their first demo in 2005, followed by Motionless Hour EP in 2007 and their full-length album, Iron Flowers in 2008. Both Motionless Hour and Iron Flowers were released through the band's own Document Records.
