Redemption (theology)

In theology, redemption is forgiveness or absolution for past sins or errors and protection from damnation and disgrace, eternal or temporary, generally through sacrifice. Redemption is common in many world religions, including Indian religions and all Abrahamic religions, especially in Christianity and Islam.

In Judaism, redemption refers to God redeeming the Israelites from their various exiles. This includes the final redemption from the present exile.

As a Christian theological foundation, redemption refers to the deliverance of Christians from sin. It assumes an important position in salvation because the transgressions in question form part of a great system against which human power is helpless.

In Buddhist theology, it encompasses a release from worldly desires.

Buddhism

In some forms of Buddhism, redemption is inherent in the discipline of giving up attachments to desires:

Other disciplines hold that "each Buddha and Bodhisattva is a redeemer", assisting the Buddhist in seeking to achieve the redemptive state. The assistance rendered is a form of self-sacrifice on the part of the teachers, who would presumably be able to achieve total detachment from worldly concerns, but have instead chosen to remain engaged in the material world to the degree that this is necessary to assist others in achieving such detachment. In varieties of Buddhism that include ideas of reincarnation, this relationship may be predestined from earlier life-experiences. In "Pure Land" traditions, redemption takes the form of entry into a realm associated with each Buddha and Bodhisattva, a Pure Land of beauty, free of rebirth; such entry is attained via meditations, visualizations, or recitations, in a particular recitation of the name of the Amitābha Buddha and mindfulness of him.

Redemption (Ali novel)

Redemption, the first novel by author, historian and former Trotskyist Tariq Ali, is a roman à clef and apostate satire of the inability of Trotskyists to handle the downfall of the Eastern bloc.

In it Ezra Einstein (a thinly disguised Ernest Mandel) calls a conference whose British sections are 'the Hoods' (the WRP), 'the Rockers' (SWP) and 'the Burrowers League' (Militant). Also invited are the 'Proletarian International Socialist Party of American Workers' (PISPAW) (SWP-US) and representatives from the 'New Life Journal' (New Left Review). It contains portraits of other well-known figures in the Trotskyist movement including Gerry Healy (Frank Hood), Tony Cliff (Jimmy Rock), Ted Grant (Jed Burroughs), Chris Harman (Nutty Shardman), Paul Foot (Alex Mango), Jack Barnes (Jim Noble), Michel Pablo ('Diablo') and Vanessa Redgrave (Laura Shaw).

Conjure One is the self-titled debut album by Canadian electronic music project Conjure One, headed by Rhys Fulber. The album was released in September 2002 (see 2002 in music).

Redemption (Derek Minor album)

The Blackout is the second studio album by American Christian hip hop artist Derek Minor, then known as PRo, released on July 13, 2010 through his own label, Reflection Music Group. In promotion of the album, a short film, also titled Redemption, was released, and the track listing was announced on June 29, 2010. The album met with a mixed reception from critics - Bob Marovich of the Journal of Gospel Music praised the album, giving it a four out of five, but Brad Davis of Holy Culture was less favorable, rating the album six-and-a-half out of ten and stating that he disliked the new direction of PRo now that he partnered with Reach.

Theology (album)

Theology is the eighth full-length album by Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor. It was released in 2007 on Rubyworks (and Koch Records in the USA). The album consists of two discs – the acoustic "Dublin Sessions" and full-band "London Sessions".

The first single from Theology is "I Don't Know How to Love Him" (an Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice song from Jesus Christ Superstar). In the issue dated 14 July 2007, the album entered the U.S. Billboard 200 chart at number 168. The album also debuted in the top 20 of Billboard's Independent Albums list at number 15. First-week sales of the album in the USA amounted to 4,700 units, while the record also charted in Ireland, France and Italy.

The album sold 375,000 copies worldwide.

Theology is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge. Since 2010, Sage Publications have managed the online publication and distribution of the journal. It covers current work in fields related to contemporary Christian thought and practice, including historical, systematic, and pastoral theology, as well as biblical studies, history, philosophy, and ethics. It was published monthly from its founding under editor E. G. Selwyn in 1920 until 1975, and has been bimonthly since 1976. The current editor-in-chief is Stephen J. Plant.
