Red Star Line

The Red Star Line was an ocean passenger line founded in 1871 as a joint venture between the International Navigation Company of Philadelphia, which also ran the American Line, and the Société Anonyme de Navigation Belgo-Américaine of Antwerp, Belgium. The company's main ports of call were Antwerp in Belgium, Liverpool and Southampton in the United Kingdom and New York City and Philadelphia in the United States. The company operated until 1935 when, due to the economic depression, it ceased trading. Its assets were eventually sold to the Holland-America Line.

Owners

The company was founded by Clement Griscom, who led it from its founding until the International Mercantile Marine Co. took it over in 1902. Red Star Line survived IMM's financial crisis in 1915. In the 1930s Red Star Line was part of Arnold Bernstein Line.

Heritage

The former warehouses of the Red Star Line In Antwerp were designated as a landmark and reopened as a museum on 28 September 2013 by the City of Antwerp. The main focus of the museum is the travel stories that could be retrieved through relatives of the some two million Red Star Line passengers. In the exhibition the visitor follows the travelers' tracks from the travel agency in Warsaw until their arrival in New York. Works of art depicting the Red Star Line emigrants made by the Antwerp artist Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930) will be exhibited there, next to Red Star Line memorabilia of the collection of Robert Vervoort.

Red star

A red star, five-pointed and filled (★), is an important symbol often associated with communist ideology. It has been widely used in flags, state emblems, monuments, ornaments, and logos.

Symbol of communism

The five-pointed red star has often served since about 1917 as a symbol of communism. One interpretation sees the five points as representing the five fingers of the worker's hand, as well as the five continents. A lesser known suggestion is that the five points on the star were intended to represent the five social groups that would lead Russia to communism: the youth, the military, the industrial labourers, the agricultural workers or peasantry, and the intelligentsia.

A red star became one of the emblems, symbols, and signals representing the Soviet Union under the rule of the Communist Party, along with (for example) the hammer and sickle. In Soviet heraldry the red star symbolized the Red Army and the military service - as opposed to the hammer and sickle, which symbolized peaceful labour.

Red Star is a revolutionary socialist organisation in Britain formed by former members of the Communist Party of Great Britain (PCC), the Alliance for Workers' Liberty, and the Peace Party. Founded in July 2004 as the Red Party, it produced five issues of its paper, the Red Star.

History

Red Platform

Politically the Red Party was a continuation of the Red Platform of the CPGB formed in April 2004 in opposition to the CPGB's electoral support for RESPECT The Unity Coalition, with the aim to reverse the CPGB's withdrawal from the Socialist Alliance Democracy Platform. It also argued for greater democracy and humanism in the party's internal structure. Though it won the battle to take the CPGB back into the SADP, most of the platform members left following disputes over the publication of their views in the Weekly Worker.

The Red Party regarded the division of the left into separate groups as natural, and even a healthy sign that socialists are arguing out complicated questions of programme. It believed the left had "lost its way" through "sectarianism", which it defined as the refusal to unite in a single workers' party unless each group's own programmatic demands are met. It further believed that the left focuses primarily on arguing these programmatic issues internally, rather than taking basic socialist arguments to the working class as a whole. It placed an emphasis on plain language arguments for socialism.

Science Fiction Poetry Association

The Science Fiction Poetry Association was established in 1978 by Suzette Haden Elgin to bring together poets and readers interested in science fiction poetry. The organization publishes the journal Star*Line and the online magazine Eye To The Telescope, and provides market listings and industry news to members. Eye To The Telescope magazine, with its rotating editorship, broadens the scope of the organization's literary footprint.

The organization also administers the Rhysling Award and bestows the Dwarf Stars Award. The two awards involve the publication of annual anthologies of nominated works. The SFPA awards Grand Master status to poets who have been actively publishing genre poetry of high caliber for at least 20 years. In 2015 the president of the SFPA is Bryan D. Dietrich.

Suburban Transit Access Route

The Suburban Transit Access Route (or STAR Line) is a proposed railway project in northwest and outer suburban Chicago, Illinois, USA. On January 30, 2003, Metra announced plans to build a new service line that would introduce a new fleet of Diesel multiple unit trains (DMUs) to connect nearly 100 communities in the region and form Metra's only suburb-to-suburb service. Currently all of Metra's services are oriented on suburb-to-city travel.

The route of the STAR line is planned to travel along the EJ&E right of way and in the median of the Northwest Tollway (Interstate 90). The tollway median was a proposed extension of the CTA Blue Line westward to Schaumburg. But these plans cancelled it. Very high ridership is expected due to its unique travel theme: around 80000 passengers a day. The line will be 55 miles in length.

The preliminary cost estimate for the STAR Line was $1.1 billion. The project was authorized under the most recent federal transportation funding bill, SAFETEA-LU, in 2005. The project underwent Alternatives Analysis as the next step in the process to secure federal funding for the project.
