Red River Delta

The Red River Delta (Vietnamese: Đồng bằng sông Hồng, or Châu thổ sông Hồng) is the flat low-lying plain formed by the Red River and its distributaries merging with the Thái Binh River in northern Vietnam. The delta measuring some 15,000 square km is well protected by a network of dikes. It is an agriculturally rich area and densely populated. Most of the land is devoted to rice cultivation.

Eight provinces together with two municipalities, the capital Hanoi and the port Haiphong form the delta. It has a population of almost 19 million.

The Red River Delta is the cradle of the Vietnamese nation. Water puppetry originated in the rice paddies here.

The region was bombed by United States warplanes during the Vietnam War.

Quảng Ninh Province is sometimes included as a province of the Red River Delta. Alternatively, it is seen as part of the Northeast region. Hà Tây Province was merged into Hanoi in 2008.

Geography

Spanning some 150 km in width, the Red River Delta is located in the western coastal zone of the Gulf of Tonkin. The Red River is the second largest river in Vietnam and one of the five largest rivers on the of East Asia coast. Its catchment covers parts of China and Vietnam and its water and sediment discharges greatly influence the hydrology in the Gulf of Tonkin.

Red River Cereal

The Red River Cereal is a porridge, or hot cereal, made with a blend of cracked wheat, rye, and brown flaxseeds that was first created in 1924 in Manitoba Canada. The cereal takes its name from the Red River of the North, more specifically the valley surrounding Winnipeg. The Red River brand name was acquired in 1995 by Robin Hood Multifoods, Inc. of Markham, Ontario. Since 2004, Robin Hood Multifoods has been part of the Smucker Foods of Canada Co.

The advised method of cooking, by boiling, yields an impressive output from the ingredients. Generally, the hot cereal is made with a 4:1 water to cereal ratio, which can be adjusted to personal consistency preferences (for example, using 3:1 to later add milk to taste). To make 4 servings combine 4 cups of water, 1 cup of Red River Cereal and 1/4 t. salt (optional). Bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Reduce heat and boil gently for approximately 5 minutes or until desired consistency, stirring occasionally. Cover, remove from heat and let stand for a few minutes.

River delta

A river delta is a landform that forms from deposition of sediment carried by a river as the flow leaves its mouth and enters slower-moving or standing water. This occurs where a river enters an ocean, sea, estuary, lake, reservoir, or (more rarely) another river that cannot transport away the supplied sediment.

Despite a popular legend, this use of the word delta was not coined by Herodotus.

Formation

River deltas form when a river carrying sediment reaches either (1) a body of standing water, such as a lake, ocean, or reservoir, (2) another river that cannot remove the sediment quickly enough to stop delta formation, or (3) an inland region where the water spreads out and deposits sediments. The tidal currents also cannot be too strong, as sediment would wash out into the water body faster than the river deposits it. Of course, the river must carry enough sediment to layer into deltas over time. The river's velocity decreases rapidly, causing it to deposit the majority, if not all, of its load. This alluvium builds up to form the river delta. When the flow enters the standing water, it is no longer confined to its channel and expands in width. This flow expansion results in a decrease in the flow velocity, which diminishes the ability of the flow to transport sediment. As a result, sediment drops out of the flow and deposits. Over time, this single channel builds a deltaic lobe (such as the bird's-foot of the Mississippi or Ural river deltas), pushing its mouth into the standing water. As the deltaic lobe advances, the gradient of the river channel becomes lower because the river channel is longer but has the same change in elevation (see slope).
