Red River (Kentucky River)

The Red River is a 97.2-mile-long (156.4 km) tributary of the Kentucky River in east-central Kentucky in the United States. Via the Kentucky and Ohio rivers, it is part of the Mississippi River watershed.

It rises in the mountainous region of the Cumberland Plateau, in eastern Wolfe County, approximately 15 miles (24 km) east of Campton. It flows generally west, through Red River Gorge in the Daniel Boone National Forest, then past Stanton and Clay City. It joins the Kentucky approximately 11 miles (18 km) southeast of Winchester.

In 1993, a 20-mile (32 km) stretch of the river in the Red River Gorge was designated by the federal government as the Red Wild and Scenic River.

The book The Unforeseen Wilderness by Wendell Berry was written to deter the Army Corps of Engineers from damming the Red River Gorge in 1971.

The largest golden redhorse ever taken in Kentucky (4 lbs., 5 oz.) was taken in the Red River.

The Red River (Cornish: Dowr Amal, meaning boundary river) which discharges into the sea to the west of Marazion is one of two watercourses in Cornwall in southwest England, UK, which share this name.

It rises in the parish of Towednack and flows in a generally southeasterly direction, passing through the parish of Ludgvan before turning to the southwest and an exit into Mount's Bay. It is bridged by numerous minor roads and paths but also by the B3311 road, the A30 road, the rail line between Hayle and Penzance and the A394 road.

Red River (Victoria)

The Red River is a perennial river with no defined major catchment, located in the East Gippsland region of the Australian state of Victoria.

Course and features

The Red River rises in remote country in the Benedore River Reference Area in the Croajingolong National Park, and flows generally south by east, before reaching its mouth with Bass Strait southwest of Sandpatch Point in the Shire of East Gippsland. The river descends 152 metres (499 ft) over its 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) course.

Trivia

In 1999, the community of River received international attention for having the world's longest "plastic" bridge. The wooden deck of the 420-foot-long (130 m) Forrest and Maxie Preston Memorial Bridge was replaced with a deck made of glass fiber-reinforced polymer composites. The bridge is 30 feet longer than Aberfeldy Bridge in Scotland, which was the former recordholder. The bridge spans the Levisa Fork and connects River to the community of Offutt.

River is also noted as the birthplace of country music star Hylo Brown and is the burial site of legendary pioneer, Jenny Wiley.

Kentucky is a 1938 Technicolor film with Loretta Young, Richard Greene, and Walter Brennan. It was directed by David Butler. It is a Romeo and Juliet story of lovers Jack and Sally, set amidst Kentucky horseracing, in which a family feud goes back to the Civil War and is kept alive by Sally's Uncle Peter.

Plot

During the Civil War, Thad Goodwin (Charles Waldron) of Elmtree Farm, a local horse breeder resists Capt. John Dillon (Douglass Dumbrille) and a company of Union soldiers confiscating his prize horses. He is killed by Dillon and his youngest son Peter (Bobs Watson) cries at the soldiers riding away with the horses.

75 years later, in 1938, Peter (Walter Brennan) now a crotchety old man, still resides on Elmtree Farm and raises horses with his niece Sally (Loretta Young). Dillon's grandson Jack (Richard Greene) and Sally meet, her not knowing that he was a Dillon. Peter Goodwin dies when his speculation on cotton drops. The Goodwins are forced to auction off nearly all their horses and Jack offers his services to Sally, as a trainer of their last prize horse, "Bessie's Boy", who falls ill.

Kentucky wine

Kentucky wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of Kentucky. About 45 wineries operate commercially in Kentucky, with most recent plantings focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Franc. Kentucky produced over two million gallons of wine in 2011.

History

One of the first attempts at large-scale commercial viticulture in the United States started in Kentucky in 1799, with plantings by the Kentucky Vineyard Society. The relatively mild climate of Kentucky, especially in the Ohio River Valley, made Kentucky an attractive place for early American winemaking. By the mid-19th century, Kentucky was the third largest wine-producing state in the country. Prohibition in the United States destroyed the wine industry in Kentucky, and the state took a long time to recover after Repeal.
