Red House Records

Red House Records is an independent Grammy-winning folk, roots, and Americana record label. Officially founded in 1983 by Bob Feldman after seeing a performance by Iowa folk singer Greg Brown, the label helped bring Brown’s music to a wider audience. The label continues to produce folk and roots singer-songwriters today. It is currently based in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Origin

The label is named for a farmhouse in Iowa where Brown was living when he started it. After Brown's albums 44 & 66 and The Iowa Waltz were released in 1981 and 1982, it briefly went dormant until he met Bob Feldman in 1983. Feldman took over operation of the record label, while Brown focused on his musical endeavors, as he had just signed on to regularly perform on the radio program A Prairie Home Companion. Feldman was known for his business philosophy of wanting "to provide a home and environment in which creative artists can make albums in total freedom—without interference from mogul types just looking for the next hit single." The first album released on the newly restarted label was Brown's In the Dark with You.

Red House (Manhattan)

The Red House is a 1903 apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side in New York City. It was built on land owned by Canadian architect R. Thomas Short of the Beaux-Arts firm, Harde & Short. He and his firm designed and built the building in a free eclectic mix of French late Gothic and English Renaissance motifs, using red brick and limestone with bold black-painted mullions in the fenestration. The center is recessed, behind a triple-arched screen.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 8, 1983.

Red House, London

Red House is a significant Arts and Crafts building located in the town of Bexleyheath in Southeast London, England. Co-designed in 1859 by the architect Philip Webb and the designer William Morris, it was created to serve as a family home for the latter, with construction being completed in 1860. It is recognised as one of the most important examples of nineteenth-century British architecture still extant.

Following an education at the University of Oxford, Morris decided to construct a rural house for him and his new wife, Jane Morris, within a commuting distance of central London. Purchasing a plot of land in what at the time was the village of Upton in Kent, he employed his friend Webb to help him design and construct the house, financing the project with money inherited from his wealthy family. Morris was deeply influenced by Medievalism and Medieval-inspired Neo-Gothic styles are reflected throughout the building's design. It was constructed using Morris' ethos on craftsmanship and artisan skills, thus reflecting an early example of what came to be known as the Arts and Crafts movement.
