Red Dog (beer)

Red Dog is a beer produced by the Miller Brewing Company and is part of their Plank Road Brewery Family. The beer contains 4.8% Alcohol by volume. Red Dog was introduced in 1994 and is brewed with two barley malts and five varieties of American hops. "Plank Road Brewery" was the name of Frederick Miller's first brewhouse in the 19th century. The Plank Road name was resurrected in the 1990s to sell Icehouse and Red Dog as a more premium beer under a different name, so as not to directly associate them with Miller Brewing. Although popular during the mid-to-late 1990s, Red Dog faded into near-obscurity after the turn of the 21st century. However, since 2005 it has been returning to stores in a current price segment between Miller High Life and Milwaukee's Best.

Red dog (card game)

Red dog, also known as red dog poker or yablon, is a game of chance played with cards. It is a variation of acey-deucey or in-between. While found in some land casinos, its popularity has declined, although it is featured at many casinos online. Confusingly, there are other card-based games of chance by the same name that are unrelated to the rules described here.

The deck used to play red dog is the standard, fifty-two-card variety. The game may be played with anywhere from one to eight decks, with an increasing number of decks decreasing the house edge — the house's advantage begins at 3.155% with one deck, but falls to 2.751% when eight decks are used. This is in contrast with some other casino card games, such as blackjack, where a higher number of decks used will increase the house edge.

The game only uses three cards at a time, which are ranked as in poker, with aces high. Suit is irrelevant. A wager is placed, and two cards are placed face up on the table, with three possible outcomes:

Blitz (gridiron football)

In American football or Canadian football, a blitz is when additional players are sent to "rush the quarterback"—that is, try to tackle the quarterback or disrupt his pass attempt. The term is borrowed from the Blitzkrieg, the German strategy of "Lightning War" employed during World War II. Like the Blitzkrieg, the blitz is a concentration of force at high speed to force a breakthrough and proceed without regard to the flanks.

History

The blitz began with the "red-dog", likely first done by Red Ettinger, sometime between 1948-1950.

The term "red-dog" referred to rushing a LB, creating a six-on-five matchup against the OL; and blitz meant rushing 7, thereby leaving one potential receiver uncovered. The term "red-dog" is at least as old as 1959.

Defensive coordinator Chuck Drulis is widely credited with inventing the safety blitz. Bill Arnsparger is the likely creator of the zone blitz.

How blitzing works

On passing plays, the offense always has at least five people blocking. From the quarterback's left to his right, they are: left tackle, left guard, center, right guard, right tackle. The Quarterback will throw the pass, and is not an available blocker. Any other player is available to potentially block, or to be a target for a pass. This is designed as part of the play. Offensive plays have varying levels of protection depending on the play design, and then are modified by the Quarterback and Center based on what they see the defense doing. In this way, they react to the way the defense sets up.
