Record World

Record World magazine was one of the three main music industry trade publications in the United States, along with Billboard and Cash Box magazines. It was founded in 1946 under the name Music Vendor, but in 1964 it was changed to Record World, under the ownership of Sid Parnes and Bob Austin. It ceased publication in April 1982. Many music industry personalities, writers and critics began their careers there in the early 1970s to 1980s.

Record World was considered the hipper, faster-moving music industry publication, in contrast to the stodgier Billboard and the perennially-struggling Cash Box. A weekly, like its competitors, it was housed in New York City at 1700 Broadway, at 53rd Street, just across the street from the Ed Sullivan Theater, and West Coast editorial offices in L.A. on Sunset & Vine. Rock bands frequented Record World's offices as part of their promotional tours, often leaving questionable promo items in their wake. The band Hot Rats, for instance, presented each writer with a freeze-dried and shrink-wrapped rat to remember them by.

Record World was a record store chain (often listed as TSS/Record World, TSS is an abbreviation for Times Square Stores) that operated out of many locations in New York during the 1970s and 1980s.

History

In 1978, the store chain was operated by Elroy Distributors, and presented Harry Chapin with a $1,000 check for the World Hunger Organization. By 1980, Record World had a total of 32 stores opened, and had expanded the company's warehouse in Freeport, New York from 15,00 square feet to 20,000 feet.

In 1982, Roy Imber was the operator of the stores, of which there were 40 operating in the U.S. Northeast. The same year, Record World was part of a "one sided single" campaign by CBS Records. In 1984, the chain was presented with gold album plaques for the hit Pointer Sisters album, Break Out.

Some malls that Record World stores were located in included Westfield Sunrise and Green Acres Mall, however, many of the Record World stores were closed by 1989, and by 1990, the chain was completely defunct, due to TSS filing for bankruptcy. Record World was purchased by W.H. Smith after declaring bankruptcy in 1992 and later rebranded The Wall the following year.
