Mary Tyler "Molly" Ivins (August 30, 1944 – January 31, 2007) was an American newspaper columnist, author, political commentator, and humorist. Born in California and raised in Texas, Ivins attended Smith College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She began her journalism career at the Minneapolis Tribune where she became the first female police reporter at the paper. Ivins joined the Texas Observer in the early 1970s and later moved to The New York Times. She became a columnist for the Dallas Times Herald in the 1980s, and then the Fort Worth Star-Telegram after the Times Herald was sold and shuttered. The column was subsequently syndicated by Creators Syndicate and carried by hundreds of newspapers.
Ivins was born in Monterey, California, and raised in Houston, Texas. Her father, Jim Ivins, known as "General Jim" because of his rigid authoritarianism (or sometimes "Admiral Jim" for his love of sailing), was an oil and gas executive, and the family lived in Houston's affluent River Oaks neighborhood. Ivins graduated from St. John's School in 1962. In high school, she was active in extracurricular activities, including the yearbook staff. She had her first pieces of journalism published in The Review, the official student newspaper of St. John's School, though she never wrote any of the political columns that would become her specialty later in life. Ivins later became co-editor of the arts and culture section of the student paper. In addition, she frequently participated in theater productions and earned a lifetime membership in Johnnycake, the drama club.
"Rave On" is a 1958 song written by Sonny West, Bill Tilghman and Norman Petty, first recorded by Sonny West (released February 1958, Atlantic 45-1174). The hit version was recorded later that same year by Buddy Holly, and was one of his six songs that charted in 1958. Holly is instantly recognizable as the artist; the record begins with the drawn-out "Well…" as stylized by Holly's trademark hiccup ("Weh-uh-heh-uh-ell…").
Most of Holly's records were produced by his manager Norman Petty in New Mexico, but "Rave On" was recorded in New York by producer-bandleader Milton DeLugg. Holly's rendition is ranked #154 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2004 list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The title was inspired by the 1956 Sun Records recording "Dixie Fried" by Carl Perkins, which uses the refrain "rave on."
The B side was the Buddy Holly composition "Take Your Time".
"Rave On" has also been covered by Bruce Springsteen with the E Street Band, Commander Cody, Status Quo, M. Ward, and folk-rock band Steeleye Span. It was a hit for The Delta Cross Band in Denmark in 1980.
Rave On!! is the third studio album released by the Southern American country rock band The Kentucky Headhunters. It was the first album recorded after the departure of brothers Ricky Lee Phelps and Doug Phelps, whose positions were replaced with lead vocalist Mark S. Orr and bass guitarist Anthony Kenney (who is the cousin of brothers Fred and Richard Young). The album produced three singles: "Honky Tonk Walkin'", "Blue Moon of Kentucky", and "Dixie Fried".
Three covers are included: "Dixie Fried" (originally by Carl Perkins), "My Gal" (originally by The Lovin' Spoonful), and "Blue Moon of Kentucky" (originally by Bill Monroe).
The album was reissued in December 2006 by CBUJ.
All songs written and composed by The Kentucky Headhunters (Anthony Kenney, Greg Martin, Mark S. Orr, Fred Young, and Richard Young) except where noted.
Rave On may refer to:
Well, the little things you say and do
Make me want to be with you
Rave on, it's a crazy feelin'
And I know it's got me reelin'
When you say, "I love you"
Well, rave on
And the way you dance and hold me tight
The way you kiss and say goodnight
Rave on, it's a crazy feeling
And I know it's got me reeling
When you say, "I love you"
Well, rave on
Well, rave on now it's a crazy feeling
And I know it's got me reeling
I'm so glad that you're revealing
Your love for me
Yeah rave on, rave on and tell me
Tell me not to be lonely
Tell me you'll love me only
Rave on to me
Well, the way you dance and hold me tight
The way you kiss and say goodnight
Rave on, it's a crazy feeling
And I know it's got me reeling
When you say, "I love you"
Well, rave on
Yeah, well, rave on
