Rare (company)

Rare is a British video game developer located in Twycross, Leicestershire. The company was established in 1985 by Tim and Chris Stamper, founders of Ultimate Play the Game. During its early years, Rare was backed by an unlimited budget from Nintendo, primarily concentrated on Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) games. During this time they created successful titles such as Wizards & Warriors, Battletoads, and R.C. Pro-Am. Rare became a prominent second-party developer for Nintendo, who came to own a large minority stake of the company. During this period, Rare received international recognition and critical acclaim for games such as Donkey Kong Country, GoldenEye 007, Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, and Conker's Bad Fur Day.

In 2002, Microsoft acquired Rare, who retained their original brand, logo, and most intellectual properties. It has since focused on developing games exclusively for Microsoft Studios' video game consoles. Notable releases include Kameo: Elements of Power, Perfect Dark Zero and Viva Piñata. In 2007, founders Tim and Chris Stamper left the company to pursue "other opportunities" and, in 2010, the company's focus shifted to the Xbox Live Avatar and Kinect, releasing three different Kinect Sports games. In 2015, Rare released Rare Replay, a compilation of 30 games produced by the company to celebrate their 30th anniversary. Rare is currently working on Sea of Thieves, a multiplayer adventure game. Several key employees left Rare to form their own companies, such as Free Radical Design and Playtonic Games. Rare was widely recognised by the gaming industry and received numerous accolades from critics and journalists. Rare's operation was often held off from critics, and the company is often described as secretive and seclusive.

Company (Heroes)

The Company refers to a fictional covert international organization in the NBC drama Heroes. Its primary purpose is to identify, monitor and study those individuals with genetically-derived special abilities. The Company played a central role in the plot of Volume Two, during the second season of the series. It is a very notable organization in the series and is connected to several of the characters.

Founders

In season two, Kaito Nakamura revealed that there were twelve founders of the Company, and a photo of the twelve is later seen (listed below under "Group photo"); it did not include Adam Monroe, an immortal human with the ability of rapid cellular regeneration, who is described as the one who "brought them all together." The Company began sometime between January 1977 and February 14, 1977. Monroe was locked away for thirty years on November 2, 1977, concluding that he only spent about 10 to 11 months with the Company. In the first season of the show, Daniel Linderman heads the Company until his demise. He is substituted in the second season by Bob Bishop, who is implied to be the Company's financial source. However, when Sylar kills him in the beginning of Season 3, Angela Petrelli takes over. Several of the founders have children who are posthumans and who are main characters within the series.

Rare (Asia album)

Rare is the eighth studio album by British rock band Asia, released in 2000. It is completely instrumental, and the only performers on this CD are John Payne and Geoff Downes. Tracks 1–16 were created for David Attenborough's nature film, "Salmon: Against the Tides", and 17–22 for an unreleased CD Rom video game.Rare is Asia's first studio album not titled with a word beginning and ending with the letter 'a'.

History

2000s

The band, formed in 1998 by Mirko Luković (vocals), Nemanja Subotić (guitar), Branislav Radojković (bass) and Dario Janošević (drums). Having won the Urban Demo festival in 2000, the band got the opportunity to record their debut studio album.

The debut album Breathing, released by both MCM and J.O.S. Virus independent record labels in 2002 and produced by Nikola Vranjković, brought sixteen songs, all of which, except the track "Ja sam taj koji čeka" ("I Am the One Who Is Waiting"), for which a promotional video had been recorded, featured the lyrics written in English language. Recorded at the Belgrade Akademija and Vitas studios from July until October 2001, the recordings featured guest appearances by Dragan Krstić "Gaga" (congas), Lazar Čolović (goblet drum), former Eyesburn member Aleksandar Petrović "Mengele", former Ništa Ali Logopedi and Block Out member Dragoljub Marković (keyboards, backing vocals), Bojan Đorđević "Suid" (rap vocals) and Uroš Petković "Frc" (scratches). The album style featured a diverse range of musical influences, including hardcore punk, trip hop, funk and grunge, also showing an interesting approach in making ballads.

Rare (conservation organization)

Rare is an international conservation organization whose stated mission is to help communities adopt sustainable behaviors toward their natural environment and resources. The organization uses social marketing and technical interventions to address threats like overfishing, deforestation and unsustainable agricultural practices. Rare’s work is founded on the belief that most of the threats faced by the environment are the result of human behavior, and that changing human behavior requires appealing to people using both rational and emotional arguments and removing any barriers that might prevent change.

History

Rare was founded on January 1, 1973 by David Hill. The organization was originally headquartered at the offices of the National Audubon Society in New York before joining the World Wildlife Fund in the 1980s. In 1987, Rare returned to being an independent entity.

Currently headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, in the United States, Rare also has offices in the Philippines, Indonesia, China, Brazil, Mozambique, Mexico and Micronesia. Rare has worked with communities and local partners in 56 countries to design and deliver its signature "Pride campaigns", which aim to change behaviors and promote scalable resource use solutions.
