Ranheim Fotball

Ranheim Fotball is a Norwegian football club from Ranheim in Trondheim. Ranheim is the football department of Ranheim IL, founded on 17 February 1901. Former manager Per Joar Hansen earned Ranheim a promotion to the Norwegian First Division after the 2009 season. They played their first 6 home matches at Abrahallen, and on 10 July 2010, they moved to their new stadium, DNB Arena.

History

Ranheim played in the Premier League in the seasons; 1937–38, 1938–39, 1939–40 and 1947–48, as well as in the seasons; 1949–50, 1952–53, 1954–55 and 1955–56.

Since 2006, Ranheim has acted as a farm club for Rosenborg, where the goal has been to establish a football team from Trøndelag in the First Division. Ranheim came close to qualifying in 2007 and 2008, but in the 2009 season it finally succeeded, and the club will play in the First Division for the 2010 season.Ranheim finished 5th in 2010 Adeccoligaen and they qualified for the promotion playoffs for a place in the Tippeligaen

Reserve teams in Norwegian football

Reserve teams in Norwegian association football play in the ordinary league system. They are always attached to their first teams with a "2" suffix, must play in a lower league than the first team, and cannot play in the Premier League or First Division. Furthermore, if a club's first team plays in the First Division, the reserves team cannot play in the Second Division either.

Controversy

Reserve teams have in general been criticized for fielding uneven teams from week to week, with many first-team players one week and more youth players the next. They have also been criticized for keeping smaller clubs out of the Second Division, meaning a more centralized football culture. In 2009 manager Ivar Morten Normark proposed to throw the reserve teams out of the ordinary league pyramid, and other managers like Dag Eilev Fagermo agreed. In a survey, 19 of 31 responding Second Division clubs wanted the reserve teams out, as did 30 of the 49 responding Third Division clubs.

Ranheim

Ranheim is a residential area located approximately 6 kilometers to the east of the centre of Trondheim, Norway. It comprises places such as Olderdalen, Væretrøa, Reppe and Vikåsen.

Historically, Ranheim is a working class community due to paper production at the local paper mill, where an overwhelming majority of Ranheim residents worked. Today, however, it is mostly middle class in composition and most residents work elsewhere. Ranheim Church was built 1933.

Ranheim was also known for its foul odour, commonly referred to as ‘Ranheimslukta,’ (the smell of Ranheim) which was caused by a paper processing by-product: hydrogen sulfide. In recent years, the paper mill has become a paper recycling plant which has decreased the emission of sulfides. The characteristic 'Ranheimslukta' has consequently disappeared.

Ranheim is home to Ranheim Idrettslag sportsclub and Ranheim Fotball.
