Ramu
The Ramu is a river in northern Papua New Guinea. The headwaters of the river are formed in the Kratke Range from where it then travels approximately 640 kilometres (398 mi) north-west to the Bismarck Sea.
Along the Ramu's course it receives numerous tributaries from the Bismarck Range to the south and the Finisterre and Adelbert Ranges from the north. During the wet season the Ramu and Sepik Rivers join across the flood plain.
History
Local villagers have lived along the river for many millennia and the river has formed the basis for food, transport and culture.
German exploration
The area encompassed by the Ramu was part of Kaiser-Wilhelmsland when Germany established German New Guinea in 1884. The Germans were quick to explore their territory and the mouth of the Ramu was discovered in 1886 by Vice-Admiral Freiherr von Schleinitz after returning to Finschhafen from an expedition to the nearby Sepik. Schleinitz called the Ramu, Ottilien after his ship the Ottilie.
The course of the river was first discovered ten years later in 1896 after Dr Carl Lauterbach, a botanist, led an expedition organised by the Neu Guinea Kompagnie to find the headwaters of the Markham River. After crossing the Ortzen Mountains from Astrolabe Bay south of Madang, Lauterbach's party instead of finding the Markham found an unknown river flowing north-west. The party canoed along a section before their supplies dwindled they returned to the coast retracing their route.
Ramu (1966 film)
Ramu is a 1966 Tamil language drama film directed by A. C. Tirulokchandar. The film features Gemini Ganesan, K. R. Vijaya and Master Rajkumar in lead roles. The film, produced by AVM Productions, had musical score by M. S. Viswanathan. The film was super hit. The film was a remake of Hindi film Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Main. It was remade in Telugu with same name starring N. T. Rama Rao and Jamuna. It was also remade in Malayalam as Babumon.

Ramu was a remake of Hindi film Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Main which was enacted and directed by playback singer Kishore Kumar. Though the Hindi version was not commercially successful, it was critically acclaimed. A. V. Meiyappan bought the remake rights and Javar Seetharaman wrote the screenplay and dialogues.
Ramu (monkey)
Ramu is an 8-year old monkey living in the Baleswar district of the Indian state of Orissa. The monkey was kept behind bars at the Remuna police station in Orissa for 5 years on the charge of disturbing communal harmony.
Arrest
Ramu was three years old when he attacked and bit a number of children in Jagannathpur village. A Muslim family was taking care of Ramu while the children belonged to the Hindu community, sparking communal tension in the area. The local police decided to arrest the animal after the incident. Once freed, the monkey again went back to biting children leading to his second arrest by the police. The police decided to put him behind bars for good.
Release
Under Indian wildlife rules, Rhesus Macaque monkeys like Ramu are a Schedule II endangered species and cannot be kept as pets or in cages. Wildlife activists demanded that some action be taken by the Forest Department of the state. The police claim to have treated the animal well giving it regular meals. According to Niranjan Kumar Dhir, the officer-in-charge at the Remuna police station, the monkey was given regular baths and fed four times a day. Following more pressure from the activists and worldwide attention brought to Ramu's plight, the police released the monkey and handed it over to wildlife officials on October 18, 2006.
