Ram Kumar (artist)

Ram Kumar (Hindi: राम कुमार; born in Shimla 1924 ) is an Indian artist and writer who has been described as one of India's foremost abstract painters. He was associated with the Progressive artist's group along with greats like M.F. Hussain, Tyeb Mehta, S.H. Raza. He is said to be one of the first Indian artists to give up figurativism for Abstract Art. His art commands high prices in the domestic and international market. His work "The Vagabond" fetched $1.1 million at Christie's, New york, setting another world record for the artist. He is also one of the few Indian Modernist masters accomplished in writing as well as painting.

Early Life and education

Ram Kumar Verma was born in Shimla, the capital of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh in a large middle-class family of eight brothers and sisters. His father was a government employee from Patiala in Punjab, India who worked in the Civil and Administrative Division in the British Government. While pursuing M.A. in Econonomics from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, he chanced upon an art exhibition in 1945. One evening, after "loitering" around Connaught Place with his friends from St Stephen's College, he landed up at an art exhibition.

Ram Kumar (basketball)

Ram Kumar (born 4 February 1964) is a former Indian basketball player and coach of the junior Indian team. He is currently the coach of the Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala team, and has been a long standing coach of the Indian Railways men's team. He played for India during 1985 to 1996 and represented the Indian national basketball team at several international championships. He also served as the captain of Indian national basketball team from 1991 to 1995. He played the position of shooting guard. In the National Championships, Ram Kumar represented Indian Railways and during his playing days, Indian Railways won eight Gold, three Silver, and three Bronze medals. Ram Kumar is the son of former basketball player Khushi Ram, an Arjuna awardee and the brother of Ashok Kumar, also an India international player. A spectacular shooter known for his impeccable 3 point shooting, Kumar emerged as one of the top shooting guard in the Asian circuit .He is a recipient of Dhyan Chand Award in 2003 for the lifetime achievement in Indian basketball. Kumar is also regarded as the best coach of the country till date .
