Ralph Abraham

Ralph H. Abraham (born July 4, 1936, Burlington, Vermont) is an American mathematician. He has been a member of the mathematics department at the University of California, Santa Cruz since 1968.

Life and work

Ralph Abraham earned his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1960, and held positions at UC Santa Cruz, Berkeley, Columbia, and Princeton. He has also held visiting positions in Amsterdam, Paris, Warwick, Barcelona, Basel, and Florence.

He founded the Visual Math Institute at UC Santa Cruz in 1975, at that time it was called the "Visual Mathematics Project". He is editor of World Futures and for the International Journal of Bifurcations and Chaos. Abraham is a member of cultural historian William Irwin Thompson's Lindisfarne Association.

Abraham has been involved in the development of dynamical systems theory in the 1960s and 1970s. He has been a consultant on chaos theory and its applications in numerous fields, such as medical physiology, ecology, mathematical economics, psychotherapy, etc.

Ralph Abraham (politician)

Ralph Lee Abraham, Jr. (born September 16, 1954), is an American physician and former veterinarian from Mangham, Louisiana, who won election on December 6, 2014, as a Republican to represent Louisiana's 5th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. He defeated his Democratic opponent, Mayor Jamie Mayo of Monroe, by a margin of 134,612 votes (64.2 percent) to 75,004 (35.8 percent).

Background

Abraham is the son of the former Marlene Posey (1932-2015), a retired educator, who died in West Monroe, Louisiana, in the summer of 2015 at the age of eighty-three. She is interred at the Alto Baptist Church Cemetery in Alto in Richland Parish, alongside her husband, Ralph Abraham, Sr., (1933-1980).

Abraham has served in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Mississippi National Guard.He and his wife, Dianne, have three children. He is a graduate of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and the Louisiana State University School of Medicine, location not specified, either New Orleans or Shreveport.

Saint Abraham (Ethiopian)

Abraham is a saint of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. His feast day is celebrated May 5.

Sapor of Bet-Nicator

Sapor of Bet-Nicator (also known as Shapur of Bet-Nicator) was the Christian bishop of Bet-Nicator.

He was reported with 4 companions to King Shapur II, on the basis of their having preached against the Zoroastrian religion. After being subjected to prolonged torture, Bishop Sapor died in prison on November 20, 339.

His companions in martyrdom included Abraham.

There is no record of a feast day for these individuals.

Abraham in the Catholic liturgy

Abraham figures prominently in Catholic liturgy. Of all the names of the Old Testament used in the liturgies of the Roman Rite, a special prominence accrues to those of Abel, Melchisedech, and Abraham through their association with the idea of sacrifice and their employment in this connection in the most solemn part of the Canon of the Mass. Abraham's name occurs so often and in such a variety of connections as to give him, among Old Testament figures, a position of eminence in the liturgy, perhaps surpassed by David alone.
