Raja Babu (actor)

Raja Babu (Telugu: రాజబాబు, born Punyamurthula Appalaraju, Telugu: పుణ్యమూర్తుల అప్పలరాజు; 20 October 1937 – 7 February 1983) was an Indian film actor, comedian and producer known for his works predominantly in Telugu cinema. Touted to be one of the finest Indian comedians, A 9 ft bronze statue of Rajababu, was unveiled in his birthplace of Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh India.

Early life

He was born in Rajamundry, East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh to Punyamurthula Umamaheswara Rao and Ramanamma as Appala Raju. His brothers are also noted comedians, Chitti Babu Punyamurthula and Ananth Punyamurthula. He graduated from Intermediate (10+2) and successfully completed Teacher Training Course. He worked sometime as Telugu teacher. He used to play in dramas during that period like Kukka Pilla Dorikindi, Naalugilla Chaavadi and Alluri Sitarama Raju.

Career

Garikapati Raja Rao invited Babu after seeing his acting skills in dramas. Babu reached Madras in 1960 and initially lived on tuitions. Film Director Addala Narayana Rao gave him a chance to act in his film Samajam in 1960. Babu was known for his slapstick comedy roles. He acted in record 589 movies in less than 20 years.

Raja Babu (Hindi: राजा बाबू) is a 1994 Bollywood movie directed by David Dhawan.

The film stars Karisma Kapoor, Govinda, Shakti Kapoor, Kadar Khan, Aruna Irani, Prem Chopra and Gulshan Grover, with music by Anand-Milind and lyrics by Sameer. It is a remake of K. Bhagyaraj's Tamil comedy movie Raasukutti. The film is choreographed by B. H. Tarun Kumar. Film faced vehement media criticism on song "sarkaye lo khatia jaada lage ". Not only the lyrics but the choreography of the song drew much flak. Magazines heavily criticised Karisma Kapoor .

Plot

Raja Babu (Govinda) is a poor orphan adopted by a wealthy village couple (Kader Khan and Aruna Irani). He is a typical country bumpkin, good-hearted but lacking in urban manners. His vanity, not discouraged by his mother's doting, leads him to have his photograph taken often at the village photo studio, each time in a different outfit. He is always accompanied by his sidekick Nandu, (Shakti Kapoor). Nandu is of a lower rung in the social strata, evidenced by his refusal to be seated on Raja's motorcycle, even when implored: the same kindness extended by the wealthy Singh family in adopting Raja is evident in the family's treatment of Raja's friend, in spite of Nandu's clownish antics.
