The album was named for Ragged Ass Road, a street in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Songs from the album include "I Wish You Well", which became the first Canadian song to debut at #1 on the RPM Canadian Singles Charts, as well as three other Top 20 hits in Canada: "Wildest Dreams" (#5 RPM Canadian Charts), "Dreamer's Dream" (#4 RPM Canadian Charts) and "Crawl" (#11 RPM Canadian Charts). Ragged Ass Road earned two Juno award nominations and achieved Platinum sales status in Canada. The album was produced by Cochrane and John Webster at Metalworks Studios and Ragged Ass Road Studios.
All songs written and composed by Tom Cochrane unless otherwise noted.
Ragged Ass Road is a short unpaved residential street in the Old Town section of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. Its name started as a joke in 1970 by resident Lou Rocher, who owned much of the property along it at the time, and his friends. At the time the street had been known as "Privy Road" due to the large number of outhouses along it. But a difficult prospecting season had yielded them little income, convincing them they were "ragged ass broke" and that that should be the name of the street.
While widely used, it was somewhat controversial. The name was not officially recognized by the city with signposts until the mid-2010s, after Rocher's death. It has been described as "one of the most famous streets" in Canada. Singer Tom Cochrane named his 1995 album after it, including a song about the street.
Ragged Ass Road is in a residential area midway between the intersection of Franklin (50th) Avenue, Yellowknife's main street, and School Draw Avenue, its lake shore road, and Yellowknife Bay on the north arm of Great Slave Lake. The terrain is flat, at approximately 160 metres (520 ft) in elevation, reflecting the proximity of the lake. The neighborhood is at the south end of the city's Old Town, on a peninsula projecting into the lake's Yellowknife Bay.
Moving out, can you see that shine
Feel the change as you roll on down the line
Where the shore fires burn out on a new frontier
Where the past don't haunt you and there's
Nothing else to fear
Baby don't you hold out too long
they might not let you be
(CHORUS)
Movin' out feel the wind in your hair
Where the sun shines at night, I can take you there
To the land of the midnight sun,
Ragged Ass Road
I carried you, you carried me
Nothin' we can't hold, nothing we can't be
They've taken everything and what have they put back
I really don't give a damn 'cause there's nothin here that we lack
Baby don't you hold out too long
They might not set you free
(CHORUS)
They might not want to let you see
They can't hold on, as your soul might not let you be,
Stand back while it burns
for the midnight sun Ragged Ass Road
All the time, again and again
Standin' out where you might see them shine
Oh did you find the midnight sun
Down on Ragged Ass Road
Are you out there everybody out there with me
Shout it out, shout it out there, one more time
to the land of the midnight sun
Ragged Ass Road
She's a dandy, yeah you bet
There's some things that you haven't seen yet
In the land of the midnight sun
