Radio City Tower

Radio City Tower (also known as St. John's Beacon) is a radio and observation tower in Liverpool, England, built in 1969 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by James A. Roberts Associates in Birmingham. It is 138 metres (452 ft) tall, and is the second tallest free-standing building in Liverpool and the 32nd tallest in the United Kingdom.

When considering the height of the building, however, it has a 10m long antenna on the roof, making it the highest structure in Liverpool (including antennas).

History

St. John's Beacon (1969 - 1999)

Near the top of the tower was a revolving restaurant, the facade and floor of the restaurant revolving as one unit, while the roof of the restaurant was used as an observation platform for visitors. There are 558 stairs up to the top, and two lift shafts which reach the top in 30 seconds.

The tower is structurally independent of the adjacent shopping centre, with a simple foundation onto sandstone. The foundation is 60 feet in diameter, 17 feet deep and begins 40 feet below Houghton Street. It has a tapering shaft that was built using slip-formed concrete. The crows nest structure at the top was then added after the shaft was formed. The original restaurant closed in 1979 for health and safety issues. It re-opened as a "Buck Rogers" space-themed restaurant in 1983, but closed again due to lack of business. After this the observation deck and the restaurant remained closed.

Radio City 2

Radio City 2 is a Independent Local Radio station, based in Liverpool and serving Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales on 105.9 FM. It is a sister station to Radio City and Radio City Talk, sharing studios atop Radio City Tower in Liverpool city centre.

Coverage

Although intended mostly for Merseyside, like its sister station, it serves Flintshire, northern Denbighshire, Greater Wrexham and eastern Greater Conwy in Wales; northern Cheshire, some parts of Greater Manchester and south-western Lancashire in England via signal overspill. In the past, the station has been telephoned from the island of Anglesey.

History

Originally it was known as "1548 City Talk", this service existed between 1989 and 1991 originally between 0700 and 1900 on weekdays. It was not a success, and a "Gold" format of music was introduced as thee station initially became "Radio City Gold", and then "City Gold".

Radio City was purchased by EMAP in 1998, and City Gold was rebranded Magic 1548 as part of the network of Magic stations on AM. In December 2001, EMAP decided that it was more economical for the Magic network to share off-peak programmes and in line with the other Magic AM stations began networking between 10am-2pm, 7pm-10am, and then 2am-6am (because of Pete Price's phone-in, which switched stations in January 2006). This resulted in Magic 1548 having more local programming on weekdays. During these hours it was simply known as Magic, although there were local commercial breaks, and local news on the hour.

Radio City 107.0

Radio City 107.0 is a Swedish radio station.

Radio City 107.0 was a former radio station for students in Lund.They changed the name to Radio City 107.0 in January 1997, SBS, now ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG joined as a dominion owner that same year.

Radio City 107.0 is the only local station in Malmö.This is the only 100% local station, in strong competition with six commercial and government radio station. Every show and program is produced in a studio in central Malmö.

In 2006, Radio City 107,0 and Mix Megapol were amalgamated. The new name of the station was Mix Megapol Radio City.

The station's main target is people between the ages of 20-40.

City Tower (Trnava)

The City Tower (in Slovak Mestská veža) is one of the most important historic monuments of Trnava, Slovakia.

The tower's construction began on 28 July 1574. In 1666 and 1683 the tower was affected by fire and since then it has remained without a roof.

The tower has a square ground plan in the shape of a solid prism with eight floors and is 57 metres high. The tower has a scenic gallery 29 metres above ground level. The corners and the highest floor are decorated with diamond sgraffito. On the south-west side is a sundial. In the alcove above the entrance is circular relief a symbol of Christ.

On the top of the tower was originally a moon with a star emblem. This symbol was replaced by a statue of the Virgin Mary sometimes between 1739–1742, but since that time it was toppled by windstorm and replaced by a life-size gilt copper statue.

In 1729 a clockwork mechanism from Franz Langer’s workshop was added to the fifth floor. The bobs weigh 300 kilograms and hang on a 30 metre rope.

City Tower (Prague)

City Tower is a skyscraper in Prague (Pankrác district), the second tallest one in the Czech Republic with 109 m in height.

Construction started in 1985 and the building was designated as a headquarters of Československý rozhlas (now Český rozhlas; a Czech public radio broadcaster). In 1993 the building was nearly completed, but appeared to be oversized for Český rozhlas (which split from Československý rozhlas after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia), technically obsolete and full of dangerous asbestos.

In later years Český rozhlas tried to sell the uncompleted building. In 1996, an agreement was signed with the company NIKO to sell the building for 1 billion CZK, but subsequently failed to pay the agreed amount. A similar scenario happened one year later with the Singaporean company Wells Holding and an agreed selling price of 550 million CZK. Finally the building was sold in 1999 to the company ECM for just 285 million CZK.

After a long planning process and legislative planning steps the radical reconstruction of the building, designed by Richard Meier, started in 2005 and finished in 2008. On 20 December 2007 the building obtained final building approval. The first tenants started to move into the building at the beginning of 2008. The largest renter is Raiffeisenbank, a.s. which occupies 10 floors of the building with about 1200 employees.
