Queer Island

Queer Island is an island in Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska, in the United States. The name is derived from a translation of the Russian "Ostrov Chudnoy".

Island (stylized as iSLAND) is the fifth studio album by American hip hop duo G-Side. It was released by Slow Motion Soundz on November 11, 2011.

Reception

Evan Rytlewski of The A.V. Club gave the album a grade of B+, saying: "There are hundreds of rappers dwelling on the same themes of hustle and determination as Yung Clova and ST 2 Lettaz, including some that do so with nimbler flows and sharper wordplay, but there are few that match the duo's personality and conviction." Tom Breihan of Stereogum said: "Production team Block Beattaz has made another zoned-out polyglot music tapestry for them, sampling stuff like Joy Orbison and Tame Impala but grounding it in classic Southern rap thump."

Thomas Perry (born 1947) is an American mystery and thriller novelist. He received a 1983 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best First Novel.

Writings

Perry's work has covered a variety of fictional suspense starting with The Butcher's Boy, which received a 1983 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best First Novel, followed by Metzger's Dog, Big Fish, Island, and Sleeping Dogs. He then launched the critically acclaimed Jane Whitefield series: Vanishing Act (chosen as one of the "100 Favorite Mysteries of the Century" by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association), Dance for the Dead, Shadow Woman, The Face Changers, Blood Money, Runner, and Poison Flower. The New York Times selected Nightlife for its best seller selection. Island Colin Thomas (born 1987-1990), better known by his stage name ísland, is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer known for his UK Top 40 Pop charting single, This Dream, used extensively by NBC and BBC during the London 2012 Olympic Games and Cartoon Network at the 2013 Hall of Game Awards. He has written or produced songs for Rihanna,Leona Lewis, Tigirlily and Brent Kutzle of One Republic.

The Wolfgang Press

The Wolfgang Press was an English post-punk band, active from 1983 until 1995, recording for the 4AD label. The core of the band was Michael Allen (vocals, bass), Mark Cox (keyboards), and Andrew Gray (guitar), with many guest musicians.

The group is best known for its 1992 international hit single "A Girl Like You (Born To Be Kissed)".

Style and influences

The official 4AD band profile describes them as "post-punk", transforming to "avant-dance groovers" with Queer. The band was frequently labeled "goth", though they denied the charge.

Allen's list of "important records" as of 1995 included De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising, Massive Attack's Blue Lines and "anything from Nick Cave and The Fall." He recalled that the record that "maybe started it all" for him was Public Image Ltd's Metal Box.

History

Rema-Rema, Mass (1978–81)

Allen started in The Models in 1977. Allen and Cox had both been members of Rema-Rema and Mass, while Gray had been a member of In Camera. All of these bands had also recorded for 4AD.

Queer (song)

"Queer" is a song written and produced by alternative rock band Garbage for the band's self-titled debut album. The song started as a demo during sessions between band members Butch Vig, Duke Erikson and Steve Marker, and had its composition finished after singer Shirley Manson joined the band. Manson rewrote the sexualized lyrics to be more ambiguous, and rearranged the song into a subdued trip hop and rock crossover structure.

In 1995, "Queer" was issued as the band's fourth single in the United Kingdom and second internationally. The song quickly became a modern rock success for the fledgling band, with positive reviews from music journalists, and becoming their first top 20 hit in both the UK Singles Chart and Billboard's Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. It also earned attention with its music video by Stéphane Sednaoui, which featured Manson detaining, stripping and shaving a man from a first-person perspective. The video earned much airplay on MTV and was nominated for Breakthrough Video at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards.
