Quan Chi

Quan Chi is a fictional character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game franchise. First appearing as an original guest character in the 1996 animated series Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, he made his series canon debut as the non-playable main antagonist of Midway's 1997 side-scrolling action-adventure game Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, which was followed by his official playable debut in the three-dimensional fighting title Mortal Kombat 4 the same year. Quan Chi has since evolved into a significant villain in the Mortal Kombat franchise, becoming involved in multiple story modes and character storylines.

In the games, Quan Chi is a sorcerer and necromancer from the eternally-damned Netherealm. He is a malevolent opportunist who will ally himself with anyone who can help him further his own goals, and his conniving nature has earned him several enemies, including Mortal Kombat mainstays Sub-Zero and the ninja specter Scorpion. As part of the eponymous pair in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, he forms a tenuous partnership with fellow sorcerer Shang Tsung in attempt to conquer both Earthrealm and the otherworldly dimension of Outworld, and plays a notable role in the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot game as he is written into the continuity of the series' first three titles, and returned in the 2015 release Mortal Kombat X. He has additionally featured in other franchise media such as the television program Mortal Kombat: Konquest and the Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series. General and media reception to the character has been mostly positive, but split in regards to his Fatality finishing moves.

Chi (Italian for "Who") is an Italian weekly gossip magazine geared towards a female viewership published in Milan, Italy.

History and profile

Chi was established in 1995. The magazine, published weekly, is based in Segrate, Milan, Italy and its publisher is Arnoldo Mondadori Editore. The company is headed by Marina Berlusconi, Silvio Berlusconi’s older daughter. Alfonso Signorini is the editor of the weekly.

In 2004 the circulation of Chi was 524,482 copies. The magazine had a circulation of 503,984 copies in 2007. In 2010 its circulation was 403,599 copies.

Photo of Princess Diana

The magazine came under criticism for publishing a picture of Princess Diana, taken as she was dying. The photo, which is black-and-white, depicts Diana receiving oxygen in the wreckage of the vehicle in which she died on 31 August 1997. The picture, which was also run with black bars across the Princess's face in the British newspaper The Sun, was taken from the book Lady Diana : L'enquete criminelle by Jean-Michel Caradec'h. Despite the criticism, the editor of the magazine defended their decision to publish it.

Chi (mythology)

Chi (Chinese: 螭; pinyin: chī; Wade–Giles: ch'ih) means either "a hornless dragon" or "a mountain demon" (namely, chimei 螭魅) in Chinese mythology. Hornless dragons were a common motif in ancient Chinese art, and the chiwen 螭吻 (lit. "hornless-dragon mouth") was an Imperial roof decoration in traditional Chinese architecture.

Quan (traditional Chinese: 權; simplified Chinese: 权; pinyin: Quán) is a Chinese surname. A notable with the surname Quan surname was Quan Deyu, who was born in 759 during the reign of Emperor Suzong. His family claimed to descend from the Later Qin official Quan Yi (權翼). His family tree was from the Sui Dynasty official Quan Rong (權榮).

During the Shang Dynasty, the Quan family founded the state of Quan (權國). In the state of Chu, the Xiong family lived in Quan Country (權縣), and took the surname Quan.

Quan (state)

The State of Quán (simplified Chinese: 权国; traditional Chinese: 權國) was a small Zhou Dynasty (1046–256 BC) vassal state of Central China. A Marquisate, then Dukedom (侯), its rulers were descendants of Shang Dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC) ruler Wu Ding with the surname Zi (子). Quan was founded by Wen Ding’s son Quan Wending (权文丁) in the area of modern day Maliang Town (马良镇), Shayang County, Jingmen City, Hubei Province, next to what would later emerge as the State of Chu.

History

During the Xia (c. 2070–1600 BC) and Shang Dynasties, China was divided into the Nine Provinces at which time Jingmen City was classified as part of Jingzhou.
In the 11th century BC the Duke of Zhou received orders from King Cheng of Zhou to announce an edict concerning descendants of the royal Ji (姬) family. They were given land in the Shihui Bridge (拾回桥) area of Shayang County where they established the State of Ran (冉国), also known as the State of Na (那国) and the State of Quan. The initial ruler of Quan was given the title “First Duke of Quan” (权甲公 pinyin: Quán Jiǎ Gōng). The history of both Ran and Quan during the Western Zhou Dynasty (1066–771 BC) is not recorded.
At the beginning of the Spring and Autumn Period (771 BC) Chu’s power was in the ascendant and the state gradually expanded southwards. Chu rulers Xiong E (熊鄂) and Ruo’Ao (若敖) (799–764 BC) were anxious to expand southwards but this would require the overthrow of the State of Ran and bring the Zhou court onto the doorstep of Chu.
