Purulia

Purulia City(Pron: ˈpʊru:ˌlɪə), also known as "Manbhum City", is a city located in West Bengal state, India, and was constituted in 1876. It is the location of the district headquarters of Purulia district. Purulia is located on the north of the Kasai river and is a major road and railway junction. It has an area of 6,259 km². It is famous for the Chhau dance.

Geography

Purulia is located at 23°20′N 86°22′E / 23.33°N 86.37°E / 23.33; 86.37. It has an average elevation of 228 metres (748 feet). Summers are hot and dry with temperatures ranging from lows of 23 °C to highs above 45 °C. The temperature reached the highest level in the country on June 18, 2005 at 51.1 °C. Winters are dry and cool with daily temperatures ranging from 5 °C to 20 °C. Most of the rainfall occurs during the wet monsoons.

It has many major rivers such as the Damodar, Subernarekha, Kangsabati, and Kumari, along with many dams including Kangsabati dam, Panchet dam, Maithon dam, Murguma dam, and Baghmundi dam. It has a varied landscape consisting of plains, plateaus and hills. Most of the major land forms can be found here.

Purulia Lok Sabha constituency is one of the present 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal state in eastern India. India has total 543 Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituencies. All the seven assembly segments of No. 35 Purulia (Lok Sabha constituency) are in Purulia district.

Purulia (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is an assembly constituency in Purulia district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Overview

As per orders of the Delimitation Commission, No. 242 Purulia (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is composed of the following: Purulia municipality; Purulia II community development blocks; Bhandar Purachipida and Manara gram panchayats of Purulia I community development block.

Joypur (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is part of No. 35 Purulia (Lok Sabha constituency).

In the 2011 elections, Kamakshya Prasad Singh Deo of Trinamool Congress defeated his nearest rival Koushik Majumder of CPI(M).

1977-2006

In the 2006 and 2001 state assembly elections, Nikhil Mukherjee of CPI(M) won the Purulia assembly seat defeating his nearest rivals Dr. Sukumar Roy of Congress and Kamakshya Prasad Singh Deo of Trinamool Congress respectively. Contests in most years were multi cornered but only winners and runners are being mentioned. Mamata Mukherjee of CPI(M) defeated Sukumar Roy of Congress in 1996, 1991 and 1987. Sukumar Roy of ICS defeated Mahadeb Mukherjee of CPI(M) in 1982. Mahadeb Mukherjee of CPI(M) defeated Sanat Kumar Mukherjee, Independent, in 1977.
