Psyche (Locke)

Psyche is a semi-opera in five acts with music by Matthew Locke to a libretto by Thomas Shadwell with dances by Giovanni Battista Draghi. It was first performed at Dorset Garden Theatre, London on 27 February 1675 by the Duke's Company with choreography the French dancing-master Saint-André. Stage machinery was by Thomas Betterton and the scenery by Stephenson. The work is loosely based on Jean-Baptiste Lully's 1671 tragédie-ballet Psyché.

Composition, performance and publication

According to Peter Holman, Psyche was "the first semi-opera written from scratch." It has over a dozen musical episodes and requires a large orchestra. Holman believes Locke composed it in response to the visit to Britain of a French opera company under the direction of Robert Cambert, which performed the opera Ariane, ou le mariage de Bacchus at the Drury Lane Theatre in March, 1674. Locke had produced his first semi-opera, The Tempest, in the same year and was eager to follow up its success with Psyche. Despite the theatre charging treble the price for tickets and the lavish staging, it was not as great a financial triumph. As a contemporary, John Downes, wrote:

Soul

The soul in many religions, philosophical and mythological traditions, is the incorporeal and immortal essence of a living being. According to Abrahamic religions, only human beings have immortal souls. For example, the Catholic theologian Thomas Aquinas attributed "soul" (anima) to all organisms but argued that only human souls are immortal. Other religions (most notably Jainism and Hinduism) teach that all biological organisms have souls, while some teach that even non-biological entities (such as rivers and mountains) possess souls. This latter belief is called animism.

Greek philosophers such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle understood that the psyche (ψυχή) must have a logical faculty, the exercise of which was the most divine of human actions. At his defense trial, Socrates even summarized his teaching as nothing other than an exhortation for his fellow Athenians to excel in matters of the psyche since all bodily goods are dependent on such excellence (The Apology 30a–b).

Anima mundi is the concept of a "world soul" connecting all living organisms on the planet.

Danielle Moonstar

Danielle "Dani" Moonstar, originally codenamed Psyche and later Mirage, is a fictional Cheyenne superheroine appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character is usually depicted as associated with the X-Men.

A mutant, Moonstar originally possessed the psionic/psychic ability to telepathically create illusions of her opponents' fears or wishes. She later developed a wide range of psionic and energy manipulation powers. She also developed some magical abilities after a series of adventures in Asgard. She was a member of the X-Men's 1980s junior team the New Mutants and, after a long absence, its reincarnation X-Force.

Publication history

Created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod, Mirage first appeared in Marvel Graphic Novel #4: The New Mutants (1982), and appeared as a feature character in New Mutants (1983), New Mutants Vol. 2 (2003), Young X-Men (2008) and New Mutants Vol. 3 (2009). She appeared for a portion of the initial run of X-Force (1991), first as an infiltrator to the Mutant Liberation Front and later as a regular X-Force team member. She was also briefly a supporting character in Avengers: The Initiative (2007) and can be seen sporadically as a background character in Uncanny X-Men and related X-Men titles. Moonstar appears as a regular team member in the all-female 2013 series Fearless Defenders by Cullen Bunn and Will Sliney.

Psyche (album)

Psyche is the debut studio album released by British recording duo PJ & Duncan, now better known as Ant & Dec. Recording on the album began in 1993, following the release of a track the duo performed during their time on Byker Grove, "Rip it Up". The song was then re-worked into their debut single, "Tonight I'm Free", which was released in December 1993 on Telstar Records. The album includes the duo's best known track, "Let's Get Ready to Rhumble", which peaked at no. 9 on the UK Singles Chart.

The track would however go on to top the singles chart in 2013, nearly nineteen years after its release, after an impromptu performance of it by the duo on their show Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.

The singles "Why Me" and "If I Give You My Number" were also released prior to the album, which was made available on 4 November 1994. Seven singles were released from the album over the course of eighteen months.

The album peaked at no. 5 on the UK Albums Chart, and was certified Platinum in the UK by the BPI. The album was reissued in Singapore in 1995, under the title Eternal Love, containing bonus remixes of "Eternal Love" itself and "Our Radio Rocks". The album was also reissued in Japan in 1995, under the title Our Radio Rocks, with the additional of remixes of "Our Radio Rocks" itself, "If I Give You My Number" and "Let's Get Ready to Rhumble". Aside from a heavy number of remixes, alternate versions, and continuations of the spoken-word eulogy "The PJ and Duncan Show", three new songs were issued as B-sides: "Style with a Smile", "So Many Questions" and "I'm a Loser", which were all written by album composers Nicky Graham, Deni Lew and Mike Olton.

Locke (film)

Locke is a 2013 British drama film written and directed by Steven Knight. The film stars Tom Hardy in the title role, with Tom Holland, Olivia Colman, Andrew Scott, Ruth Wilson, Ben Daniels, and Alice Lowe providing voices.

The film premiered at Broad Street in Westside, Birmingham the 70th Venice Film Festival on 2 September 2013. The film had a limited release in the United Kingdom beginning on 18 April 2014, and grossed $5 million worldwide. Locke received critical acclaim, particularly for Hardy's performance. Hardy won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor for his performance.

Plot

The day before he must supervise a large concrete pour in Birmingham, construction foreman Ivan Locke learns that Bethan, a colleague with whom he had a one-night stand seven months previously, has gone into premature labour. Despite his job responsibilities and although his wife and sons are eagerly awaiting his arrival home to watch an important football match, Locke decides to drive to London to be with Bethan during childbirth. Locke never forgave his father for abandoning him as a child, and he is determined not to make the same mistake.

Square Co., Ltd.'s role-playing video game Final Fantasy VI (released as Final Fantasy III in North America) features fourteen permanent player characters, the largest number of any game in the main Final Fantasy series, as well as a number of characters who are only briefly controlled by the player.

Concept and creation

Final Fantasy VI was the first game of the series to feature character designers other than Yoshitaka Amano. While Amano drew most of the character artworks, monster designer and graphic director Tetsuya Nomura created the original designs and many story episodes for Shadow and Setzer Gabbiani, and field graphic designer Kaori Tanaka created the original designs of Edgar Roni Figaro and Sabin Rene Figaro. Co-director Kitase wanted to create as many characters that can stand up to be main characters and that the story did not revolve around one character, so each character can have something to bring to the table.
