Privilege (social inequality)

Privilege is a special right or advantage available only to a particular person or group of people. The term is commonly used in the context of social inequality, particularly in regard to social class,race, age, sexual orientation, gender, and disability. Two common examples would be having access to a higher education and housing. Privilege can also be emotional or psychological, regarding personal self-confidence and comfort, or having a sense of belonging or worth in society. It began as an academic concept, but has since become popular outside of academia.

Substantial analysis of privilege and specific social groups have been published and have included a variety of perspectives. Some commentators have addressed limitations in the term, such as its inability to distinguish between concepts of "spared injustice" and "unjust enrichment", and its tendency to conflate disparate groups.

History

The concept of privilege dates back to 1903 when American sociologist and historian W. E. B. Du Bois published the essay The Souls of Black Folk, in which he wrote that although African Americans were observant about white Americans and conscious of racial discrimination, white Americans did not think much about African Americans, nor about the effects of racial discrimination. In 1935, Du Bois wrote about what he called the "wages of whiteness", which he described as including courtesy and deference, unimpeded admittance to all public functions, lenient treatment in court, and access to the best schools.

Notes (2013 film)

Notes is a short romantic comedy film about a pair of roommates whose relationship developes through a series of post it notes. Notes marked the first installment of a trilogy of short films by Worrying Drake Productions. The film was also the directorial debut for John McPhail.

Plot

Adam (Tyler Collin) has just moved into a new flat with Abi (EmmaClaire Brightlyn) who is a nurse. The pair have never met and as a result of their conflicting sleep patterns the pair communicate via post it notes. What starts off as a complaint over their preferred types of coffee soon develops into flirtatious messages.

Notes was released on 7 June 2013 and was positively received by critics. Thomas Simpson of MovieScramble wrote:

The film went on to appear in many domestic and international film festivals and picked up the Best Film accolade at the Edinburgh Bootleg Film Festival, as well as the audience award at the Palme Dewar festival in Aberfeldy.

PPC Journal

PPC Journal was an early hobbyist computer magazine, originally targeted at users of HP's first programmable calculator, the HP-65. It originated as 65 Notes and the first issue was published in 1974. It later changed names in 1978 to PPC Journal and in 1981 to PPC Calculator Journal.

The founder of the PPC (Personal Programming Center) was Richard Nelson. This hobbyist group worked around the journal and was known because Nelson discovered hidden instructions on the HP-65 calculator. Later the club and the journal got maximum notoriety when several club members discovered the "synthetic instructions" of the HP-41C.
