Preppy

Preppy or prep (all abbreviations of the word preparatory) refer to a subculture in the United States associated with the old private Northeastern university-preparatory schools. The terms are used to denote a person seen as characteristic of a student or alumnus of these schools.Prep has become a colloquialism in the United States and has largely replaced preppy in modern usage. Characteristics of preps in the past, include a particular subcultural speech, vocabulary, dress, mannerisms, etiquette, reflective of an upper-class upbringing.

Definition

The term preppy derives from the private, university-preparatory or prep schools that some American upper-class and upper-middle-class children attend. The term preppy is commonly associated with the Ivy League and oldest universities in the Northeast, since traditionally a primary goal in attending a prep school was admittance into one of these institutions. Preppy fashion derives from the fashions of these old Northeastern colleges in the early to mid-twentieth century. Lisa Birnbach's 1980 book Official Preppy Handbook, which was written to poke fun at the rich lives of privileged Ivy League and socially elite liberal arts college students but ended up glamorizing the culture, portrays the preppy social group as well-educated, well-connected, and although exclusive, courteous to other social groups without fostering serious relationships with them. Being well-educated and well-connected is associated with an upper-class socioeconomic status that emphasizes higher education and high-income professional success.

Preppie (album)

Preppie is the fifth studio album by American recording R&B artist Cheryl Lynn, released on September 16, 1983 by Columbia Records. The album features the R&B hit singles, "Encore" and "This Time".

Reception

Preppie includes the hit singles "Encore" (#1 R&B hit) and "This Time" (#49 R&B hit). It reached #8 on the R&B albums chart. The album was primarily produced by Lynn herself, with the exception of "Encore," which was produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. on March 15, 1989, 6 years after its release, the album was RIAA certified Gold. in spite of the album's success, the album remains out of print in the United States.

Preppie! (video game)

Preppie! is an action video game for the Atari 8-bit family. The game was created by Russ Wetmore as a video game clone of Frogger and published by Adventure International in 1982.

Gameplay

Preppie!'s gameplay follows the design established by Frogger: crossing lanes of traffic, then maneuvering across water by jumping on floating objects. The frog is recast as a preppy, and the setting moved to a country club where traffic consists of golf carts and reel mower-pushing groundskeepers, and canoes occupy the water (in addition to alligators and logs).

Instead of simply crossing from one side to the other, as in Frogger, the goal is to retrieve a golf ball from the top of the screen, then return it to the bottom of the screen. When all golf balls have been collected, the level is over. There are ten levels in all.

History

Preppie! was followed by Preppie! II, created also by Wetmore, in 1983. The sequel is a maze game. In January 2016 Russ Wetmore released the source code of Preppie!, Preppie II and Sea Dragon to the public on the Internet Archive.
