Prayers (anime)

Prayers (プレイヤーズ, Pureiyāzu) is a 2005 OVA anime set in the year 2014 where the young of Japan have rebelled against the government for segregating Shibuya and declared themselves to be independent of Japan. In the city, there are special people called "prayers" who fight in literal band battles in which the power of their songs can incapacitate or even kill rival contestants.

Plot

Shibuya declared independence from the rest of Japan. Now Itasu monsters roam Shibuya which mostly looks like ruins because of an earthquake when Tasuku was a kid. Tasuku, now a young man playing acoustic guitar music saves a young girl, Shoko, from such a monster. Shoko has amnesia. There is a rumor that when Shibuya is filled with songs, it will return to Japan through a rainbow. The girl Shoko is not the first sample, and they are all under surveillance. 5 years ago Shibuya declared its independence from Japan. Around the same time an earthquake destroyed most of the buildings. The evil Irusaibu rules Shibuya. The people has become obsessed with a game called Pray where 2 or more individuals in groups or alone plays music directly into the brain of the opponent. Tasuku saves a young girl, Shoko, from an Itasu monster. She has amnesia and lives with Tasuku. Meanwhile, Shoko and her surroundings are monitored, and there is a rumor that when all of Shibuya sings, it will return to Japan through a rainbow. It is soon revealed that Shoko has a great voice for the Pray game, and many more games follow.

Prayer (from the Latin precari "to ask earnestly, beg, entreat") is an invocation or act that seeks to activate a rapport with an object of worship through deliberate communication.

Prayer can be a form of religious practice, may be either individual or communal and take place in public or in private. It may involve the use of words, song or complete silence. When language is used, prayer may take the form of a hymn, incantation, formal creedal statement, or a spontaneous utterance in the praying person. There are different forms of prayer such as petitionary prayer, prayers of supplication, thanksgiving, and praise. Prayer may be directed towards a deity, spirit, deceased person, or lofty idea, for the purpose of worshipping, requesting guidance, requesting assistance, confessing transgressions (sins) or to express one's thoughts and emotions. Thus, people pray for many reasons such as personal benefit, asking for divine grace, spiritual connection, or for the sake of others.

Some anthropologists believe that the earliest intelligent modern humans practiced a form of prayer. Today, most major religions involve prayer in one way or another; some ritualize the act of prayer, requiring a strict sequence of actions or placing a restriction on who is permitted to pray, while others teach that prayer may be practiced spontaneously by anyone at any time.

Prayers (rock duo)

Prayers is an electronic rock duo founded in 2013 by Rafael Reyes and Dave Parley. Prayers are the first musicians/artists use the term Cholo goth to define their genre of music which lyrically explores the harsh realities of gang and street life over throbbing beats and swirling synthesizers.

Prayers is influenced by Christian Death, Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, Pet Shop Boys and other Gothic rock and dark 80s music, as well as by Reyes' life as gang member in the Sherman Grant Hill Park 27 gang, one of San Diego's oldest gangs, also known as Sherman 27. He was jumped into the gang as a teenager. Prayers' music, lyrics and image breaks down stereotypes within the Goth and Cholo subcultures.

Prior to forming Prayers, Reyes, who was born Cotija, Michoacán and came San Diego as young child, had created two other bands, Baptism of Thieves and Vampire, and performed in a solo project, Nite Ritual. Reyes and Parley, a Tijuana native, began recording immediately upon meeting. In three days they had recorded their first CD, SD KILLWAVE which they released independently on first as a CD and download and then on vinyl.
