Selenipedium is a genus of the Orchid family (Orchidaceae) (Subfamily Cypripedioideae). The genus has been given its own tribe, Selenipedieae, and subtribe, Selenipediinae. It is abbreviated Sel in trade journals.
The name of the genus is derived from the Greek selen, which means "moon", and pedium, which means "slipper" (referring to the pouch).
The seed capsules of these Central and South American lady's slipper orchids were formerly used as vanilla substitutes, but selenipediums are now rarely cultivated. Partly this is because of the difficulty of doing so, but is probably also due to the relatively small size of the Selenipedium's flower. The wild flower's Amazonian habitat is also under threat, so extinction is a risk for all species of Selenipedium.
There are only six true selenipedium species known ():
Sel is a quartet of Lithuanian performers. They are well known for their numerous chart-topping singles and albums in the Baltic countries. The group's head is Egidijus Dragunas. The group also contains a DJ, a back-vocalist and songwriter and a non-electronic instrument player. The group's style has changed throughout the years - the first albums created by Sel are usually categorized as Hip-Hop and rock works. With their later albums, Sel turned to a more Acid-House/R&B style, but still remained loyal to their original fast-paced rap vocals and light crunk. The group has worked with many European artists and created over thirty songs that have ranked high on the top 40 Hottest Lithuanian Songs List.
Selá is a river in Vopnafjörður, Iceland, and one of Iceland's most exclusive rivers for salmon angling.
Selá river is originated from many small rivers coming from the highlands, which run from a mountain area called Dimmufjallgarður (Dark Mountains).
Originally the salmon could go about 20 km up the river. However, two fish ladders have been built in the river adding about 18 more kilometers to the stretch the salmon can run up for spawning. The first ladder was built in 1967 and the second in 2011.
Selá is visited by a number of Icelandic and foreign anglers every summer. In 2004, "The Golden Bear" golf champion Jack Nicklaus fished Selá, and in July 2006 former US president George H. W. Bush spent several days angling.
Icelandic Entrepreneur Orri Vigfússon leads conservation efforts at Selá.
