Madison (name)

Madison is a surname of English origin, which has become a popular given name in the United States. Madison, commonly spelled Maddison in Northeastern England, is a variant of Mathieson, meaning son of Matthew, although possibly occasionally standing for son of Maddy, where Maddy is a pet form of Maud.

Madison is also used as a given name. As a name, it has become popular for girls in recent decades. Its rise is generally attributed to the 1984 release of the movie Splash. From a practically non-existent girl's name before 1985, Madison rose to being the second-most-popular name given to female babies in 2001. It has since declined in popularity as a girl's name, however, slipping to seventh place by 2009.

As a masculine given name, Madison can be found within the top 1,000 names for boys in the United States up until about 1952. Madison returned to the top 1,000 ranked boy's names in 1987, remaining there through 1999, and it also was the 858th-most-common boys' name in 2004, but it remains uncommon as a boy's given name.

The Madison is a novelty dance that was popular in the late 1950s to mid-1960s.

Description and history

It was created and first danced in Columbus, Ohio, in 1957. The local popularity of the dance and record in Baltimore, Maryland, came to the attention of the producers of The Buddy Deane Show in 1960. Picked up by dance shows across the country, it became widely popular.

The Madison is a line dance that features a regular back-and-forth pattern interspersed with called steps. Its popularity inspired dance teams and competitions, as well as various recordings, and today it is still sometimes performed as a nostalgic dance. The Madison is featured in the John Waters movie Hairspray, and it continues to be performed in the Broadway musical Hairspray. Both the film and the musical feature one of many songs released during the Madison "craze" in the US.

Ray Bryant recorded "Madison Time" for Columbia Records in 1959. Billboard stated that "The footwork for the Madison dance is carefully and clearly diagrammed for the terpers." The Ray Bryant version was the version featured in the film Hairspray. The other popular version was by Al Brown & The Tunetoppers. Another version was recorded by radio presenter Alan Freeman for Decca Records in 1962.

Madison is a Canadian television teen drama series produced by Forefront Entertainment Group in Vancouver and broadcast in 88 countries worldwide. After first run of 65 episodes on Global TV Network 1993 - 1998, it continued to air on Showcase and YTV in Canada 1998 - 2002. Madison was a hard-hitting teen drama of 30 minute episodes. The series tackled teens' serious life crises with realistic resolutions. The series was created originally for classrooms as a learning aid under the title of "Working It Out at Madison", but networks fell in love with its gritty story lines and impressive acting. The producers were nominated for Best Dramatic Series at Canada's Gemini Awards for outstanding television in 1995, 96 and 1997.

Power! (known as Critical Mass in Europe) is a computer game developed by Simon Francis in 1985 for the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum.

Plot

The player operates a rocket-powered hovercraft whose mission is to destroy an enemy transfer beam that is protected not only by long-distance enemy raiders and mines, but also molecular disorientation that sucks the energy from the player's attack craft.

Gameplay

The player may control the hovercraft in either a normal joystick operational mode or with vectored movement. When the player pushes forward on the joystick, the hovercraft accelerates, and when pulling back on the joystick, speed decreases.

Reception

In 1988, Dragon reviewed Power!, and gave the game 4 out of 5 stars.

Power (UTA station)

Power is a light rail station in Salt Lake City, Utah, served by the Green Line of the Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) TRAX system. The Green Line provides service from the Salt Lake City International Airport to West Valley City (via Downtown Salt Lake City), and connects with the rest of the TRAX system, as well as UTA's FrontRunner commuter rail and S Line streetcar.

Description

The station is located at 1480 West North Temple Street, with the island platform in the median of the street. The Rocky Mountain Power facility is located just south of the station. Unlike many TRAX stations, Power does not have a Park and Ride lot. Like many other UTA stations, this station has art work included in its design. The art work for the Power station includes benches designed to resemble wind turbines. The combined work is called The Power Station and was designed by Darl Thomas of Salt Lake City. The station is part of a railway right of way that was created specifically for the Green Line. The station opened on April 14, 2013, and is operated by the Utah Transit Authority. It is also one of four TRAX stations (all of which are located the north end of the Green Line) that is powered by solar panels located on top of the station's canopy through a project which was initially funded in part by Rocky Mountain Power.

Power (2014 Kannada film)

Power*** is a 2014 Kannada-language Indian action film, a remake of the 2011 Telugu film Dookudu. Directed by K. Madesh and produced by Ram Achata, Gopichand Achanta, and Anil Sunkara for 14 Reels Entertainment. It features Puneeth Rajkumar and Trisha Krishnan in lead roles.

Plot

Krishna Prasad (Prabhu) is a politician driven by idealistic values and a sense of social service. His followers are his brother Sathya (Dharma), and supporters (Shobharaj, Sharath Lohitashwa). The people of Krishnanna's constituency elect him as a M.L.A.. Krishna an ardent follower of Dr. Rajkumar, establishes his own independent political empire, consensus with ideals proposed by Rajkumar. Krishna Prasad's dream is to see his son as a politician revered by people. During this time, he meets with a fatal accident, in which his brother and his followers are also killed.

14 years later, Krishna Prasad's son Bharath (Puneeth Rajkumar) becomes a daring super-cop in Mumbai. He is on a mission to apprehend mafia don Nayak (Kelly Dorjee), who is involved in illegal drug trade, extortion and arms trafficking. It is later revealed that Krishna prasad actually survived the accident but ended up in a state of coma. However, this truth is hidden by Krishna Prasad's family from the people. Bharath maintains a low profile to catch Nayak. In an undercover operation in Spain, Bharath gets hold of Nayak's brother, Bunty. Later, it is revealed that corrupt opposition leader (Doddanna), who is also tied up with Nayak, was the mastermind behind Krishna Prasad's accident, and had planned to derail Krishna's political empire as he was opposing his illegal businesses and relation with Nayak.
