Posh!

"Posh!" is an up tempo song and musical number from the popular 1968 Albert R. Broccoli motion picture, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It is written by the songwriting team of Sherman & Sherman. It makes reference to the myth that the word "posh" is an acronym for "Port Out, Starboard Home". In the film it is sung when "Grandpa Potts" (played by Lionel Jeffries) is being carried away in his outhouse. He sees the situation as serendipitous until he finally meets his kidnapper, Baron Bombhurst in Vulgaria.

Use in stage musical

The song is also featured prominently in the 2002 and 2005 stage musical versions of the film. In the stage musical versions, Grandpa sings the song to the children in the family dining room and not while being kidnapped. An extra verse was also added to the beginning of the stage version, to tell the story of when Grandpa sailed out from Liverpool. The song is reprised a few times and is used as "Grandpa's" leit motif.

Posh is a play by the British playwright Laura Wade. It was first staged at the Royal Court Theatre downstairs in 2010. The play concerns an Oxford student dining club called "The Riot Club", a fictionalised version of the Bullingdon Club. The first production, produced during the British General Election, received favourable reviews.

Plot

Ten members of "The Riot Club", an exclusive Oxford University dining club, have rented out a country pub's dining room for their termly dinner. Their president, James, who is about to leave university, is falling out of love with the club and promises the suspicious landlord Chris and his waitress daughter Rachel that he will keep things under control. While James avoids his presidential duties, others vie for his position. Inspired by his godfather Jeremy, a former Riot Club member and now a Tory MP, Guy tries to impress the boys with a "ten bird roast'. Others are less restrained; one has hired Charlie the prostitute. When Charlie arrives she refuses to get under the table and perform oral sex on the boys; they are surprised at her scruples.

Backronym

A backronym or bacronym is a specially constructed phrase that is supposed to be the source of a word that is, or is claimed to be, an acronym. Backronyms may be invented with serious or humorous intent, or may be a type of false or folk etymology.

The word is a combination of backward and acronym, and has been defined as a "reverse acronym". Its earliest known citation in print is as "bacronym" in the November 1983 edition of the Washington Post monthly neologism contest. The newspaper quoted winning reader Meredith G. Williams of Potomac defining it as the "same as an acronym, except that the words were chosen to fit the letters".

Differences from acronyms

An acronym is a word derived from the initial letters of the words of a phrase: For example, the word radar comes from "Radio Detection and Ranging".

By contrast, a backronym is constructed by creating a new phrase to fit an already existing word, name, or acronym. For example, the United States Department of Justice assigns to their Amber Alert program the meaning "America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response", although the term originally referred to Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old abducted and murdered in Texas in 1996. Backronyms are also often used for comedic effect, as exemplified by NASA's C.O.L.B.E.R.T.

The Riot Club

The Riot Club is a 2014 British drama thriller film directed by Lone Scherfig and written by Laura Wade, based on Wade's 2010 play Posh. The film stars Max Irons, Sam Claflin and Douglas Booth. It is set among the Riot Club, a fictional all-male, exclusive dining club at Oxford University. When the play Posh premiered, the Riot Club was often described as a thinly veiled version of the real-life Bullingdon Club, or High Trees Society, although according to Wade it is entirely fictitious.

Synopsis

Alistair and Miles, both with aristocratic connections, start their first year at Oxford University. Though they are very different — Miles is down to earth and happy to have a girlfriend from a lower background, Lauren, whilst Alistair is a snob with aspirations to follow his uncle, a Tory MP — the common bond is that they both become members of the Riot Club, a long established elite drinking club priding itself on hedonism and the belief that money can buy anything.

Alistair takes the club in more of a competitive way and ends up loathing Miles. Having been barred from most establishments in Oxford, they have their annual dinner at the function room in a country pub, where their rowdy behaviour angers other patrons though they reimburse Chris, the landlord. After hiring a prostitute who refuses to perform group oral sex, Alistair takes Miles' phone and texts Lauren without Miles knowing, whom they importune to Miles' horror. Getting progressively more drunk and ingesting drugs, they start to trash the room, and when Chris comes to complain, Alistair savagely assaults him, landing him in hospital. Though shocked, none of the others do anything to stop him except Miles, who rings for an ambulance.

POSH (TV series)

POSH is a Philippine teen-oriented drama directed by Joselito Altarejos credited as Jay Altarejos in the series. POSH was produced by Viva Television and co-produced and broadcast by Q, a sister television network of GMA Network, from June 24, 2006 to December 23, 2006.

Storyline

Posh means “rich” or “upper-class”. Thus, it is the story of the groups of rich teenagers and poorest teenagers. The latter is known as “KAPOSH” (the conjoined slang term derived from kapós, meaning “insufficient”, and posh itself). The members of rich teenagers are Rea, Vaness, Hayca, PJ, Princess (who is PJ’s cousin and was discovered she was really from a poor family), and Ivan, while the poorest are Iwa, Gian, Vivo, Nikki, Vince, and Ashley (who pretends as a rich girl to be assimilated to her rich friends).
