Portage la Prairie

Portage la Prairie /ˈpɔːrtᵻdʒ lə ˈprɛərɪ/ is a small city in the Central Plains Region of Manitoba, Canada. As of 2011, the population was 12,996 and the land area of the city was 24.67 square kilometres (9.53 sq mi). Portage la Prairie is located approximately 75 kilometres (47 mi) west of Winnipeg, along the Trans-Canada Highway (located exactly between the provincial boundaries of Saskatchewan and Ontario), and sits on the Assiniboine River, which flooded the town persistently until a diversion channel north to Lake Manitoba (the Portage Diversion) was built to divert the flood waters. The city is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie.

According to Environment Canada, Portage la Prairie has the most sunny days during the warm months in Canada.

It is the administrative headquarters of the Dakota Tipi First Nations reserve.

History

The area was most likely inhabited by Aboriginals, or First Nations, before European settlers began to arrive prior to 1850. In September of 1738, after the fur trade had extended into Western Canada. Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, sieur de La Vérendrye (a French Canadian explorer and fur trader) built Fort La Reine north of the Assiniboine River to serve as a fur trading post, and provide the explorers with a "home" operating base, from which they would explore other parts of central Manitoba and western North America.

Portage la Prairie is a rural municipality in the province of Manitoba in Western Canada. It surrounds the city of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba's fourth largest city. Also within the borders of the municipality are the Dakota Plains First Nation and most of the Long Plain First Nation Indian reserves.

Portage la Prairie (electoral district)

Portage la Prairie was a federal electoral district in Manitoba, Canada, that was represented in the Canadian House of Commons from 1904 to 1949.

This riding was created in 1903 from parts of Macdonald riding.

It was abolished in 1947 when it was redistributed into Norquay, Portage—Neepawa and Selkirk ridings.

La Prairie is a provincial electoral district in Quebec, Canada that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. It consists of the cities of Candiac, Delson, La Prairie and Saint-Philippe. Prior to 1988, it was spelled as one word: Laprairie.

It was originally created for the 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada). Its final election was in 1919. It disappeared in the 1923 election and its successor electoral district was Napierville-Laprairie. It was recreated in for the 1973 election from parts of Chambly and Napierville-Laprairie.

In the change from the 2001 to the 2011 electoral map, it lost Saint-Constant and Saint-Mathieu to the newly created Sanguinet electoral district.

La Prairie is an off-island suburb (south shore) of Montreal, in southwestern Quebec, Canada at the confluence of the Saint-Jacques River and the Saint Lawrence River in the Regional County Municipality of Roussillon. The population as of the Canada 2011 Census was 23,357.

History

French Jesuits were the first Europeans to occupy the area, which was named La Prairie de la Magdelaine but was also called François-Xavier-des-Prés. The land was given to the Jesuits by Jacques de La Ferté and the Company of One Hundred Associates in 1647. It is in La Prairie that the story Kateri Tekakwitha took place.

In 1668, the site was named Kentaké, the Iroquois name for "at the prairie". In the beginning of modern Quebec history, the territory of La Prairie would be visited on numerous occasions by Iroquois and English settlers from New York, among others at the time of the Anglo-Iroquois expedition of Pieter Schuyler in 1691, who commanded two battles on August 11, 1691.

In 1845, the village of La Prairie was established. One year later, La Prairie-de-la-Magdelaine was established. In 1909, La Prairie obtained official city status.

Portage la Prairie is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It has existed since the province's creation in 1870.

Portage la Prairie is located in southern Manitoba. It is bordered to the north by Lake Manitoba, to the south by Carman, to the west by Turtle Mountain, and to the east by Lakeside and Morris.

Portage la Prairie itself is in the central part of the riding. Other communities in the riding include Oakville, Newton, St. Marks, and Dakota Plains Wahpeton First Nation.

The riding's population in 1996 was 18,785. In 1999, the average family income was $45,302, and the unemployment rate was 7.00%. The health and service sector accounts for 18% of the riding's industry, followed by agriculture at 13%.

Thirteen per cent of Portage la Prairie's residents are aboriginal, while a further 6% are German.

Portage la Prairie has been held since by the Progressive Conservative Party for most of its history, although the New Democratic Party has increased its standing in the riding in recent years.
