The numbering of Popes John does not occur in strict numerical order. These discrepancies in regnal numbers are due in part to a now discounted belief in another Pope John between John XIV and John XV, and the antipapacy of John XVI.

John XX

Confusion in numbering Popes John results from an error in the textual transmission of the entry on John XIV (983/984) in the Liber Pontificalis. This entry originally specified not only the duration of his pontificate ("VIII mens." = eight months), but also the duration of his ensuing imprisonment by Antipope Boniface VII, "per IV menses" ("for four months"). In the 11th century, some time after the pontificate of John XIX, this entry on John XIV was misread to be referring to two different popes John, the first reigning for eight months and directly succeeded by another John reigning for four months:

In distinguishing these two Johns, the second one came to be numbered as "Iohannes XIV. bis" ("John XIV the second") and it was confused with a historic character, the cardinal deacon John son of Robert, who opposed Boniface VII after John XIV's death. Given the fact that the following Popes John, from John XV (985–996) until John XIX (1024–1034), seemed to have neglected the existence of John XIV "bis", Pedro Julião "corrected" this error by taking the name John XXI rather than John XX.

"John" is a song by American rapper Lil Wayne, and the second single from his album Tha Carter IV. The song features rapper Rick Ross, and it peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. "John" was released on March 24, 2011, on iTunes. The song uses the hook from Rick Ross' song "I'm Not a Star" from his album Teflon Don. The song title refers to musician John Lennon. Lil Wayne performed the song at 2011's MTV Video Music Awards to the riff of Black Sabbath song, Iron Man.

The music video was released on VEVO on May 12, 2011. Birdman makes an appearance in the video, which was directed by Colin Tilley, who directed Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now," which also featured Wayne.

Remixes

On May 11, rapper Ace Hood released a freestyle over the beat of "John," which was off his "Body Bag Vol. 1" mixtape. Another rapper Wiz Khalifa released a remix to "John" titled "Chuck". Rapper Chamillionaire freestyled a verse along with the original lyrics on his Badass Freemixes 2 mixtape. On December 26, Lil Wyte also released his own version on his Wyte Christmas mixtape. Tyga also released a version of the track titled "Well Done 2" on a mixtape along with the same name. Jim Jones also released a freestyle.

John (ship)

The John was an Australian sloop of 30 tons that was owned by John Palmer & Co. It was built at Woolloomooloo in Sydney and registered on 11 June 1803. In November 1806 it sailed from King Island in Bass Strait with a crew of five aboard and a cargo of seal skins. It was never seen again.

Pope (horse)

Pope (1806 – 29 August 1831), also known as Waxy Pope and The Sligo Waxy, was a Thoroughbred racehorse that won the 1809 Epsom Derby and was a leading sire in Ireland. Pope was the first Epsom Derby winner produced by his sire Waxy, who would go on to sire three more Derby winners and three winners of the Epsom Oaks. Pope was a half-brother to the prolific broodmare Penelope, the dam of the influential stallions Whisker and Whalebone who were also sired by Waxy. Pope died on 29 August 1831 at Clearwell.

Background

Pope was bred by the Duke of Grafton and was foaled at his Euston Hall stud in 1806. Pope was sired by the 1790 Epsom Derby winner Waxy, who was purchased by the Duke and became an influential and important sire that went on to sire three additional Derby winners and three winners of the Epsom Oaks. Pope's dam, Prunella, was bred by the Duke of Grafton and was sired by Highflyer out the mare Promise, sired by Snap. Prunella produced 12 foals for the Duke of Grafton between 1796 and her death in December 1811. Pope was her seventh foal and the first of four foals sired by Waxy. Full-siblings to Pope include the mares Pledge (the dam of the 1819 Derby winner Tiresias), Pope Joan (the dam of the 1827 2,000 Guineas winner Turcoman and 1828 Oaks winner Turquoise) and Prudence (the dam of Reginald and Rowena). Half-siblings to Pope include the mares Pelisse (winner of the Oaks), Penelope (the dam of 1810 and 1815 Derby winners Whalebone and Whisker who were also sired by Waxy), Parasol (the dam of Pastille and Pindarrie) and the good racer Pioneer.
