An astrophysical jet (hereafter 'jet') is a phenomenon often seen in astronomy, where streams of matter are emitted along the axis of rotation of a compact object. While it is still the subject of ongoing research to understand how jets are formed and powered, the two most often proposed origins are dynamic interactions within the accretion disk or a process from the central object (such as a black hole). When matter is emitted at speeds approaching the speed of light, these jets are called relativistic jets, because the effects of special relativity become important. The largest jets are those from black holes in active galaxies such as quasars and radio galaxies. Other systems which often contain jets include cataclysmic variable stars, X-ray binaries and T Tauri stars. Herbig–Haro objects are caused by the interaction of jets with the interstellar medium. Bipolar outflows or jets may also be associated with protostars (young, forming stars), or with evolved post-AGB stars (often in the form of bipolar nebulae).
Empresas Polar is a Venezuelan corporation, that started as a brewery founded in 1941 by Lorenzo Alejandro Mendoza Fleury, Rafael Lujan and Karl Eggers in Antímano "La Planta de Antimano", Caracas. The Polar 8 Project was a Canadian shipbuilding project based upon a class of 167-metre, 101,000-horsepower, diesel-electric powered high endurance icebreakers intended for the Canadian Coast Guard. The project was developed as a means to assert Canada's sovereignty in the Arctic Ocean. It commenced in 1985 but was cancelled in 1990 while still in the final design stage.
The Polar 8 Project was proposed to Parliament in 1985 by the new Progressive Conservative government of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. It was Canada's direct response to the unauthorized transit through the Northwest Passage in summer 1985 by the USCGC Polar Sea, a United States Coast Guard icebreaker.

"Jet" is a song by Paul McCartney and Wings from their album Band on the Run. Supposedly written about a puppy that McCartney owned, the song was the first British and American single to be released from the album. The song peaked at number 7 in both the British and American charts on 30 March 1974, also charting in multiple countries in Europe. It has been released on numerous compilation albums, and has since become one of the band's most well-known tracks.

Reviewers have reported that the subject of the song is McCartney's Labrador Retriever dog named "Jet". McCartney has also substantiated this claim.

Jet is based on subLOGIC's classic Flight Simulator. The player may choose either an F-16 Fighting Falcon for land missions or an F-18 Hornet for missions starting at sea from an aircraft carrier. The player can also practice flying and aerobatics in "free flight" mode, dogfight against Soviet MiGs, launch strikes against land or sea based targets, watch a demo, or load a subLOGIC scenery disk. For either combat mode, the player can to select which missiles and bombs the plane will have.
Most of the indicators on a real jet fighter are present in Jet: altimeter, heading, frame loading, gear status, brake status, fuel level, radar, attitude, and range. The player can turn a few of these on and off. The controls consist of either the joystick or numeric keypad for steering and other keys to handle the chosen optional indicators, landing gear, weapons, and an eject button. Different perspectives can be chosen - a view from the control tower instead of the jet's cockpit.
