Plön

Plön (German pronunciation: [ˈpløːn]) is the district seat of the Plön district in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and has about 8,700 inhabitants. It lies right on the shores of Schleswig-Holstein's biggest lake, the Great Plön Lake, as well as on several smaller lakes, touching the town on virtually all sides. The town's landmark is Plön Castle, a chateau built in the 17th century on a hill overlooking the town.

Plön has a grammar school with a 300-year history, and is home to a German Navy non-commissioned officer school and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology. The town, nestled as it is in the hilly, wooded lake district of Holstein Switzerland (Holsteinische Schweiz), also has importance in the tourism industry.

History

In the course of the Migration Period, Slavic tribes entered the region of Plön during the early 7th century following the withdrawal of the original Germanic population. On the large island opposite Plön, which was later called Olsborg, they built a large fortification. They called their settlement Plune, which means "ice-free water".

Pláně (Plzeň-North District)

Pláně is a village and municipality (obec) in Plzeň-North District in the Plzeň Region of the Czech Republic.

The municipality covers an area of 13.91 square kilometres (5.37 sq mi), and has a population of 259 (as at 3 July 2006).

Pláně lies approximately 23 kilometres (14 mi) north of Plzeň and 82 km (51 mi) west of Prague.

Plön (German pronunciation: [ˈpløːn]) is a district in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is bounded by (from the east and clockwise) the districts of Ostholstein and Segeberg, the city of Neumünster, the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, the city of Kiel and the Baltic Sea.

History

The district was established by the Prussian administration in 1867. In 1932 it was enlarged with parts of the dissolved district of Bordesholm. During the 20th century some municipalities left the district due to incorporation into the city of Kiel.

Geography

The inland part of this small district is covered with lakes. The Großer Plöner See ("Great Plön Lake", 29 km²) and the Selenter See ("Lake Selent", 22 km²) are the largest lakes in Schleswig-Holstein. The lakeland and the adjoining parts of the neighbouring district Ostholstein constitute the region called Holstein Switzerland, since this is a very hilly countryside. However, the highest hill (Bungsberg) has only 168 m. North of the lakeland there is the Probstei, a region on the coast of the Baltic Sea.
