Flight dynamics

Flight dynamics is the study of the performance, stability, and control of vehicles flying through the air or in outer space. It is concerned with how forces acting on the vehicle influence its speed and attitude with respect to time.

In fixed-wing aircraft, the changing orientation of the vehicle with respect to the local air flow is represented by two critical parameters, angle of attack ("alpha") and angle of sideslip ("beta"). These angles describe the vector direction of airspeed, important because it is the principal source of modulations in the aerodynamic forces and moments applied to the aircraft.

Spacecraft flight dynamics involve three forces: propulsive (rocket engine), gravitational, and lift and drag (when traveling through the earths or any other celestial atmosphere). Because aerodynamic forces involved with spacecraft flight are very small, this leaves gravity as the dominant force.

Aircraft and spacecraft share a critical interest in their orientation with respect to the earth horizon and heading, and this is represented by another set of angles, "yaw," "pitch" and "roll" which angles match their colloquial meaning, but also have formal definition as an Euler sequence. These angles are the product of the rotational equations of motion, where orientation responds to torque, just as the velocity of a vehicle responds to forces. For all flight vehicles, these two sets of dynamics, rotational and translational, operate simultaneously and in a coupled fashion to evolve the vehicle's state (orientation and velocity) trajectory.

Flight (Steinbeck story)

"Flight" is a short story by American writer John Steinbeck, first published in his collection The Long Valley. It appears in the ledger notebook under the title "Man Hunt". The story outlines a young man, Pépé, who is sent into town by his mother. She says he is not yet a man. While he is gone, Pépé kills a man, and after his return, he is forced to flee.

Flight (released 1988 in Oslo, Norway by Hot Club Records - HCR 25) is a studioalbum (LP) by the Norwegian guitarist Thorgeir Stubø, including two live recordings.

Review

This is the fourth album by Thorgeir Stubø released in 1985, and is a mixture of studio and live recordings from a concert in Tromsø, and consists of a variety of lineups. The record is perhaps the Stubø album that have the greatest diversification of styles. In addition to the traditional hard bop format, presented through songs like «Swinging till the girls come home» (Oscar Pettiford), «Nica's Dream» (Horace Silver), Stubø presents more modern, Pat Martino oriented influence through his own, more modal-based compositions, «Flight» and «For Wes and Pat». On Wayne Shorter's classic «Fall», there is also used synthesizer, and electric piano is also represented on a track. Fred Lacey's gorgeous ballad «Theme for Ernie» as made famous by Coltrane, also interpreted the great trio with acoustic guitars, like «Chelsea Bridge» (Strayhorn) and «Autumn in New York» (Duke).

Pitch (card game)

Pitch (or "High Low Jack") is an American trick-taking card game derived from the English game of All Fours (Seven Up). Historically, Pitch started as "Blind All Fours", a very simple All Fours variant that is still played in England as a pub game. The modern game involving a bidding phase and setting back a party's score if the bid is not reached came up in the middle of the 19th century and is more precisely known as Auction Pitch or Setback. Whereas All Fours started as a two-player game, Pitch is most popular for three to five players. Four can play individually or in fixed partnerships, depending in part on regional preferences. Auction Pitch is played in numerous variations that vary the deck used, provide methods for improving players' hands, or expand the scoring system. Some of these variants gave rise to a new game known as Pedro or Cinch.

Pitch without auction

Two or more players play individually or in equal-sized teams, seated alternatingly. Normal play rotation is clockwise. Players cut for first deal. Cards rank as in Whist and have certain numerical values called pips as shown in the table. In each deal up to 4 scoring points are distributed among the parties. The game is won by the party that first reaches a previously specified target score over several deals.
