Pirate TV

Pirate TV is an American sketch comedy series that aired on MTV. The series premiered January 26, 1990.

Overview

Set on a boat that beamed illegal television signals, Pirate TV consisted of skits and parodies of commercials and television programs, including Rastapiece Theater, a takeoff of Masterpiece Theatre with a dreadlocked, patois-speaking host, and "Reejok" (jockstraps with inflatable pouches, à la Reebok's "Pump" sneaker, popular at the time). It was co-created by Dave Kolin and Steve Kerper.

Originally airing as 13 one-hour episodes, they were later edited down to a half hour. Many of the concepts of the show, and indeed Rastapiece Theater itself, later transferred to Kerper and Kolin's HBO series Hardcore TV (1992-1993)

The crew of the boat were played by Richard Goteri ("Tony"), Boyd Hale (himself), James Rosenthal (himself), Gena Rositano (herself), Spruce Henry (himself) and Gregory Wolfe & James Wolfe as "the Wolfe Brothers."

Some episodes had a special guests such as Sgt. Slaughter, Maury Povich and Clarence Clemons. Most notably was Tim Blake Nelson as "Scab O'Hooley". He would race his pet rats to answer the great questions that plagued the world, so you could "...Quit yer blatherin' and get on with yer miserable lives. This is Scab O'Hooley sayin, I'm not laughin atcha...I'm not laughin!"

Piracy

Piracy is an act of robbery or criminal violence at sea. Those who engage in acts of piracy are called pirates. The earliest documented instances of piracy were in the 14th century BC, when the Sea Peoples, a group of ocean raiders, attacked the ships of the Aegean and Mediterranean civilizations. Narrow channels which funnel shipping into predictable routes have long created opportunities for piracy, as well as for privateering and commerce raiding. Privateering uses similar methods to piracy, but the captain acts under orders of the state authorizing the capture of merchant ships belonging to an enemy nation, making it a legitimate form of war-like activity by non-state actors.(For a land-based parallel, compare the association of bandits and brigands with mountain passes.) Historic examples include the waters of Gibraltar, the Strait of Malacca, Madagascar, the Gulf of Aden, and the English Channel, whose geographic strictures facilitated pirate attacks.

Series 2

A second series had already been planned well in advance of the shooting of the first. Already over 96 scripts had been written by Mitton himself and other writers with a regular 13 episodes to be produced. Most of the series would have been set more "up river" instead of the Bigg City docks area due to difficulty shooting in that area. Besides the regular main cast, some new tugs would have been introduced. However, Television South (TVS), which was in charge of producing the series, was in bankruptcy at the time, which prevented the series from being produced.

Escape Velocity Nova

Escape Velocity Nova (a.k.a. EV Nova or EVN) is a video game by Ambrosia Software, in collaboration with ATMOS. It is the third game in the Escape Velocity series of space trading & combat games.

History and development

Nova began as a plug-in for Escape Velocity Override in July 1998. Two years later, ATMOS was brought in to convert the plug-in to a full game which was available for beta-testing on July 15, 2001. It was fully released on March 18, 2002.

Gameplay

Nova takes place around star systems in the Milky Way, many of which have planets or space stations that the player can land on. Each star system is either controlled by a faction and has an evaluation of the player's crimes or contributions to that star system and its faction, or is uninhabited and controlled by no one. The player's ship usually travels between star systems by "hyperjumping" by fixed (and to the user, instantaneous) paths to surrounding systems. The player can also use rare wormholes which transport the player's ship to a fairly random star system, or can use a "hypergate" system to move between certain systems after the Sigma Shipyard mission string has been completed.
