Piracy

Piracy is an act of robbery or criminal violence at sea. Those who engage in acts of piracy are called pirates. The earliest documented instances of piracy were in the 14th century BC, when the Sea Peoples, a group of ocean raiders, attacked the ships of the Aegean and Mediterranean civilizations. Narrow channels which funnel shipping into predictable routes have long created opportunities for piracy, as well as for privateering and commerce raiding. Privateering uses similar methods to piracy, but the captain acts under orders of the state authorizing the capture of merchant ships belonging to an enemy nation, making it a legitimate form of war-like activity by non-state actors.(For a land-based parallel, compare the association of bandits and brigands with mountain passes.) Historic examples include the waters of Gibraltar, the Strait of Malacca, Madagascar, the Gulf of Aden, and the English Channel, whose geographic strictures facilitated pirate attacks.

Series 2

A second series had already been planned well in advance of the shooting of the first. Already over 96 scripts had been written by Mitton himself and other writers with a regular 13 episodes to be produced. Most of the series would have been set more "up river" instead of the Bigg City docks area due to difficulty shooting in that area. Besides the regular main cast, some new tugs would have been introduced. However, Television South (TVS), which was in charge of producing the series, was in bankruptcy at the time, which prevented the series from being produced.

Escape Velocity Nova

Escape Velocity Nova (a.k.a. EV Nova or EVN) is a video game by Ambrosia Software, in collaboration with ATMOS. It is the third game in the Escape Velocity series of space trading & combat games.

History and development

Nova began as a plug-in for Escape Velocity Override in July 1998. Two years later, ATMOS was brought in to convert the plug-in to a full game which was available for beta-testing on July 15, 2001. It was fully released on March 18, 2002.

Gameplay

Nova takes place around star systems in the Milky Way, many of which have planets or space stations that the player can land on. Each star system is either controlled by a faction and has an evaluation of the player's crimes or contributions to that star system and its faction, or is uninhabited and controlled by no one. The player's ship usually travels between star systems by "hyperjumping" by fixed (and to the user, instantaneous) paths to surrounding systems. The player can also use rare wormholes which transport the player's ship to a fairly random star system, or can use a "hypergate" system to move between certain systems after the Sigma Shipyard mission string has been completed.

Rufio

Rufio was a punk rock band based in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

History

Rufio was formed when bassist Jon Berry was a freshman in college and the other three members, Scott Sellers, Mike Jimenez, and Clark Domae, were seniors in high school. Sellers and Domae had been acquainted for some time and found a shared talent in the guitar. Sellers met Berry and they began playing together in various groups and sessions. Around the same time, the two purchased a 4-track to record the songs they were writing. After Berry and Sellers began recording, they asked Jimenez to listen to their recordings and play drums with them. Domae joined shortly after and completed the official lineup. The band took their name from the character Rufio, leader of the Lost Boys in the absence of Peter Pan in the 1991 film Hook.

Rufio released its debut record, Perhaps, I Suppose..., in 2001 on The Militia Group label. The band returned in June 2003 with MCMLXXXV, released on the Nitro label), which was recorded with the aid of producer Nick Rasculinecz who has also recorded with Foo Fighters and Rancid. Rufio went on to play on the Warped Tour that summer supporting that album. The band's third album, The Comfort of Home, was released in July 2005. The band embarked on a tour that fall with MxPx and Relient K.

Rufio (officer of Caesar)

Rufio was an officer of the Roman general and statesman Julius Caesar. In 47 BC he was appointed by Caesar commander-in-chief of the three Roman legions that were stationed in Egypt.

Rufio was the son of a freedman and came in 48 BC as a member of Caesar’s army to Egypt. After Caesar had intervened in the Ptolemaic struggle for the throne between the siblings Cleopatra and Ptolemy XIII and won the Alexandrian war against the party of Ptolemy XIII (January 47 BC) he stationed three legions in Egypt to safeguard his victory. These troops, the 27th, 37th, and 39th legion, served to protect, but also to check the rule of Cleopatra, who had become Caesar’s mistress and now reigned as allied queen.

Contrary to the tradition Caesar did not appoint a senator supreme commander of the Roman occupying army but his reliable officer Rufio. The main reason for this nomination was the fear of Caesar that an influential senator, who was left behind in Egypt as commander-in-chief, could use the economic strong and strategic important land on the Nile as base to make a bid for power, whereas Rufio had a too low rank and did not possess the necessary connections. Caesar also seems to have considered his officer was very trustworthy, because Suetonius calls Rufio a lover (exoletus) of Caesar (but probably not in a sexual sense).
