Pink Pearl

Pink Pearl is the fourth album by American singer/songwriter Jill Sobule, released in 2000. (see 2000 in music).

The record, whose name is both a model of pencil eraser by Eberhard Faber and a slang term for the clitoris, contains the singles "One of These Days" and "Rainy Day Parade".

The album includes the satirical "Heroes", which suggests that every potential hero turns out to be deeply flawed:

The album's "Mary Kay" is a joking yet sympathetic take on Mary Kay Letourneau, the teacher who had sex with a 13-year-old student. "Lucy at the Gym" is a portrait of anorexia.

The song "Mexican Wrestler" was later covered by Emma Roberts on the TV series Unfabulous, for which Sobule writes the music, and also appeared on Roberts' 2005 album Unfabulous and More: Emma Roberts. The track "Rainy Day Parade" was featured on the soundtrack to the Ben Stiller film Mystery Men.

The track "Rock Me to Sleep," co-written with Richard Barone, was featured on the television shows Felicity, Dawson's Creek, and The West Wing. It was also covered by Sally Timms of the Mekons on her 1999 album, Cowboy Sally's Twilight Laments for Lost Buckaroos.

Paper Mate

Paper Mate is a registered division of Sanford L.P., a Newell Rubbermaid company that produces writing instruments. Paper Mate's offices are located in Oak Brook, Illinois along with those of Newell Rubbermaid's other office products divisions.

History

Early in 1941 Patrick J. Frawley acquired his first company, a ballpoint pen parts manufacturer that had defaulted on its loan. In 1949, The Frawley Pen Company developed a revolutionary new ink, which dried instantly. The pen that delivered this ink was called "The Paper Mate".

In 1955 the Frawley Pen Company was acquired by Gillette for $15.5 million. In late 2000, Gillette's stationery products division was purchased by Newell Rubbermaid.

Products

Paper Mate manufactures ballpoint pens, mechanical pencils, Flair felt tip pens, and erasers, which are offered in a wide variety of colors and shapes. In 2010, Paper Mate introduced environmentally friendly biodegradeable pens, pencils and erasers as additions to its wide-ranging product portfolio.

Pink Pearl (apple)

The Pink Pearl apple is a pink-fleshed apple cultivar developed in 1944 by Albert Etter, a northern California breeder. It is a seedling of 'Surprise', another pink-fleshed apple that is believed to be a descendant of Malus niedzwetskyana.

History

In 1940, after many years of work on breeding red-fleshed apples, Etter set up a partnership with George Roeding Jr.'s California Nursery Company, one of the goals of which was to introduced some of Etter's Surprise-derived cultivars to the public. Eventually Roeding settled on test seedling #39, which apparently impressed him with its looks (translucent skin, medium size, and tapered shape), its tart-sweet flavor, and its late-summer ripening date. He secured U.S. plant patent 723 for it on Etter's behalf, christened it Pink Pearl, and featured it in his 1945 catalog.

Pink Pearl apples are generally medium-sized, with a conical shape. They are named for the color of their flesh, which is a bright rosy pink sometimes streaked or mottled with white. They have a translucent, yellow-green skin, and a crisp, juicy flesh with tart to sweet-tart taste. Pink Pearl apples ripen in late August to mid-September. It is susceptible to scab, and the fruit tend not to keep well on the tree once ripe.
