56 Pine Street

56 Pine Street – originally known as the Wallace Building after its developer, James Wallace – at 56-58 Pine Street between Pearl and William Streets in the Financial District of Manhattan, New York City, was built in 1893-94 and was designed by Oscar Wirz in the Romanesque Revival style.

The building's facade consists of brick, stone and terra cotta and features colonnettes, deeply inset windows and rounded arched openings. The flowered panels and fantastic heads which embellish the building is "some of the finest Byzantine carving in New York."

The building was designated a New York City landmark in 1997, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

100 Pine Center

100 Pine Center is a class-A office building at the northwest corner of Pine Street and Front Street in San Francisco's Financial District. The building is 145 m (476 ft) with 33 floors, and 402,500 sq ft (37,000 m²) of rentable office space, a 150-car garage including 30 valet parking spaces.

Completed in 1972 as headquarters of the Continental Insurance Company, the building is among the earlier of San Francisco's modern skyscrapers. By the start of the dot-com bubble the property, then owned by Grosvenor Properties, was outdated and suffered from deferred capital maintenance. In 1997 it was purchased by Walton Capital, which invested heavily in upgrades, re-measured the building at 36,000 square feet (3,300 m²) larger than before, then aggressively re-leased space at higher rates. After two failed transactions, Walton Capital sold the building to investors led by Unico Properties in May, 2000 for US$156 million. Unico re-sold the property to the Alaska Permanent Fund based on a US$149 million price in August, 2005, but retained a minority ownership share.

70 Pine Street

70 Pine Street – formerly known as the American International Building, 60 Wall Tower and originally as the Cities Service Building – is a 67-story, 952-foot (290 m) office building located at the corner of Pearl Street and running to Cedar Street in the Financial District of Manhattan, New York City. It was built in 1931-32 by the Cities Service Company for the oil and gas baron Henry Latham Doherty, and was designed by the firms of Clinton & Russell and Holton & George in the Art Deco style.

The building was designated a New York City Landmark and Interior Landmark in June 2011.

History

The Cities Service Building was constructed during the New York skyscraper race, which accounts for its gothic-like spire-topped appearance, a popular architectural style at that time. When completed it was the third tallest building in the world, after the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. It was the last skyscraper to be built in Lower Manhattan prior to World War II, and was the tallest building in Lower Manhattan until the 1970s when the World Trade Center was completed. Upon the 9/11 Attacks, it regained for some years the status of the tallest downtown building. As of 2015, it is the eighth tallest in New York City, the 20th tallest in the United States, and the 103rd tallest building in the world.
