Pimlico /ˈpɪmlk/ is a small area within central London in the City of Westminster. Like Belgravia, to which it was built as a southern extension, Pimlico is known for its garden squares and Regency architecture.

The area is separated from Belgravia to the north by Victoria Railway Station, and bounded by the River Thames to the south, Vauxhall Bridge Road to the east and the former Grosvenor Canal to the west.

At Pimlico's heart is a grid of residential streets laid down by the planner Thomas Cubitt beginning in 1825, and now protected as the Pimlico Conservation Area. Pimlico is also home to the pre-World War II Dolphin Square development and the pioneering Churchill Gardens and Lillington and Longmoore Gardens estates, now designated conservation areas in their own right. The area has over 350 Grade II listed buildings and several Grade II* listed churches.

Notable residents have included politician Winston Churchill, designer Laura Ashley, philosopher Swami Vivekananda, actor Laurence Olivier, illustrator and author Aubrey Beardsley, Kenyan nationalist Jomo Kenyatta and the inventor of lawn tennis, Major Walter Wingfield.

Random House

Random House is the largest general-interest trade book publisher in the world. It is part of Penguin Random House, which is owned by German media conglomerate Bertelsmann and global education and publishing company Pearson PLC. Random House also has an entertainment production arm for film and television, Random House Studio; one release in 2011 was One Day. The company also creates story content for media including video games, social networks on the web, and mobile platforms. It is one of the largest English-language publishers, formerly known as the "Big 6", now known as the "Big Five".

Bertelsmann owns 53% of the joint venture.

History

Random House was founded in 1927 by Americans Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer, two years after they acquired the Modern Library imprint from publisher Horace Liveright, which reprints classic works of literature. Cerf is quoted as saying, "We just said we were going to publish a few books on the side at random," which suggested the name Random House. In 1934 they published the first authorized edition of James Joyce's novel Ulysses in the Anglophone world.

    Do not fear me,
    I bring no harm,
No one knows where I came from,
I walk on water all day long,
No one knows how far I came,
No one even knows my name,
I sometimes sing as I float,
No one ever hears a note,
I sometimes move from place to place,
No one ever sees my face,
    I can't touch I can't weep I can't taste I can't sleep,
    I appear I disappear I reappear I'm getting near,
I'm tired of living in my brain,
I feel no joy I feel no pain,
    I don't live I just exist,
I need to know the life I missed,
I'm the only one host I'm this town,
I'm the only ghost in the lost and found,
I'm the only one if you look around,
