Piku is a 2015 Indian comedy-drama film directed by Shoojit Sircar and produced by N.P. Singh, Ronnie Lahiri and Sneha Rajani. It stars Deepika Padukone as the titular protagonist, Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan, with Moushumi Chatterjee and Jishu Sengupta portraying supporting roles. It tells the story of the short-tempered Piku Banerjee (Padukone), her grumpy, ageing father Bhashkor (Bachchan) and Rana Chaudhary (Khan), who is stuck between the father-daughter duo, as they embark on a journey to Kolkata.
The story and screenplay was written by Juhi Chaturvedi. Principal photography began in August 2014 and was wrapped up in December. Anupam Roy composed the soundtrack and score, and wrote the lyrics.
Piku was released on 8 May 2015. It garnered wide critical acclaim upon release. Critics praised the screenplay, performances, humour and overall simplicity. It also emerged as a commercial success worldwide. Made on a budget of ₹420 million (US$6.2 million), Piku earned ₹1.41 billion (US$21 million) worldwide.
Shoojit Sircar (Bengali: সুজিত সরকার) is an Indian film director and producer. He directed Yahaan (2005), Vicky Donor (2012) and Madras Cafe (2013) and produced Aparajita Tumi (2012). He won the National Film Award for Vicky Donor in Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment category, shared with John Abraham. He also won the Indian Competition Special Jury Award at Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema in 2005 for Yahaan. He is now making a documentary on Amitabh Bachchan. He is associated with Rising Sun Films and has made television commercials for Saffola, 2G, Apsara Pencils, Fair & Lovely, Maruti WagonR, Cadbury, Dove, Zomato, and many other brands.
He is known for making independent films. Aparajita Tumi is an adapted screenplay from Sunil Gangopadhyay's Dui Naari Haathey Torobaari. His 2012 film Vicky Donor was grand box office success, earning ₹ 13.40 crores in the opening weekend. Sircar's Shoebite went into production in 2012 but was cancelled. He directed Madras Cafe released on 23 August 2013. His film Piku released in 2015.
