Phuture is a Chicago-based acid-house group founded in 1985 by Spanky, DJ Pierre and Herb J. The group's 12-minute track "Acid Tracks" (1987) is one of several recordings that lay claim to being the first-ever acid house record.
"Acid Tracks" featured characteristic bass lines from the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer—which was manipulated to produce resonant and squelchy sounds uncharacteristic for a bass guitar it was designed to emulate. The track rose to popularity at DJ Ron Hardy's Music Box club in Chicago and has since been re-pressed many times.
Phuture released a great number of acid tracks now considered classics, usually as 12-inch vinyl maxi singles.
The music the group produces is dark and monotonous. Many tracks are very long, even passing the 10-minute mark (such as "Acid Tracks"). Sparse lyrics are occasionally related to drugs, like the lyrics of "Your Only Friend" (1987), which describe cocaine addiction, or a simple chant, such as on "Spirit" (1994).
The group also recorded under several pseudonyms, generally using the substitution of ph or pf for f. For example, the name Phortune or Pfortune.
Phuture 303 was formed in 1996 by synthesizer fan [bandmember]Earl Smith AKA DJ Spank Spank[/bandmember] after he left Phuture behind and has had, at various times, different members over the years such as [bandmember]Roy Davis, Jr.[/bandmember], [bandmember]Damon Neloms[/bandmember] (aka Professor Trax), [bandmember]L.A. Williams,[/bandmember] Ron Maney AKA DJ Skull and most recently Rio "The Musician" Lee. They released a hand full of singles during that time and also had two full length albums "Alpha & Omega" in 1996 and "Survival's Our Mission" in 2001.
In 2014 Pierre and Smith reunited as PHUTURE with newest member Lee in tow and are working on new material and an full length tour.
ICQ is an instant messaging computer program that was first developed and popularized by the Israeli company Mirabilis in 1996. The name ICQ stands for "I Seek You". Its ownership was passed to AOL in 1998 and to Mail.Ru Group in 2010.
The ICQ client application and service were initially released in November 1996 and the client was freely available to download. Users could register an account and would be assigned a number, like a phone number, for others to be able to contact them (users could also provide handles). ICQ was the first stand-alone instant messenger and the first online instant messenger service as such — while real-time chat was not in itself new to the internet (IRC being the most common platform at the time), the concept of a fully centralized service with individual user accounts focused on one-on-one conversations set the blueprint for later instant messaging services like AIM, and its influence is seen in modern social media applications.
At its peak around 2001, ICQ had over 100 million accounts registered. At the time of the Mail.Ru acquisition in 2010, there were around 42 million daily users. Today ICQ has 11 million monthly users.
