Phinehas

According to the Hebrew Bible, Phinehas or Phineas (/ˈfɪniəs/; Hebrew: פִּינְחָס, Modern Pinəḥas, Tiberian Pinchas) was a priest during the Israelites' Exodus journey, the grandson of Aaron and son of Eleazar, the High Priests (Exodus 6:25). He distinguished himself as a youth at Shittim with his zeal against the Heresy of Peor. He was displeased with the immorality with which the Moabites and Midianites had successfully tempted the Israelites (Numbers 25:1-9) to inter-marry and to worship Baal-peor, so he personally executed an Israelite man and a Midianite woman while they were together in the man's tent, running a javelin or spear through the man and the belly of the woman. His action brought an end to a plague said to have been sent by God to punish the Israelites for sexually intermingling with the Midianites.

Phinehas is commended for having stopped Israel's fall to idolatrous practices brought in by Midianite women, as well as for stopping the desecration of God's sanctuary. After the entry to the land of Israel and the death of his father, he was appointed the third High Priest of Israel, and served at the sanctuary of Bethel (Judges 20:28). He is commemorated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church on September 2.

The Phinehas - EP is an EP and the first release by American metalcore band Phinehas.

Release

The EP was self-released on December 15, 2009. A music video was produced for the song "Well If the Earths are Stopped, Then the Fox Faces the Hounds" and was directed by Ricky Norris. "I Am the Lion" and "Grace Disguised by Darkness" were rerecorded for the band's debut Thegodmachine. The tracks "Well if the Earths are Stopped, then the Fox Faces the Hounds" and "Panhammer" were later rerecorded for the EP The Bridge Between.

Phinehas is an American Christian metalcore band from La Mirada, California, formed in 2001. They have released three studio albums and two EPs and are currently signed to Artery Recordings.

History

Formation and first releases

Phinehas formed in 2001 in La Mirada, CA, near Los Angeles. The band went through a few lineup changes before settling on Sean McCulloch (vocals), Jason Combs (guitars), Ryan Estrada (bass) and Lee Humerian (drums). The band recorded and independently released a self-titled EP on December 15, 2009. After the release, the band went on a 10-day tour before beginning work on their debut album Thegodmachine. After finishing production of the album, the band looked at many labels, before being signed to Red Cord Records in 2011.Thegodmachine was released on September 30, 2011 through Red Cord, and received acclaim from music critics. Most of the praise came from the band's "uncompromising blast of metalcore" and the thrash metal-style riffs. The band toured extensively to promote the album, including a spot at Cornerstone 2011, with bands such as P.O.D, For Today, Close Your Eyes and Living Sacrifice among others. In early 2013 the Bridge Between EP was released, featuring updated versions of songs from their self-titled EP and acoustic renditions of songs from Thegodmachine.
