Phil Hughes

Philip Joseph "Phil" Hughes (born June 24, 1986) is an American right-handed professional baseball pitcher for the Minnesota Twins of Major League Baseball (MLB). He played in MLB for the New York Yankees from 2007 through 2013. He stands 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m) tall and weighs 240 pounds (110 kg). He was the Yankees' first-round pick in the 2004 MLB Draft.

During his time in the Yankees' minor-league system, Hughes was one of the most highly anticipated prospects in baseball, but his major league career has thus far been marked by inconsistency. He debuted in the major leagues in 2007 as a starting pitcher and quickly demonstrated his potential with a bid for a no-hitter in only his second MLB start. However, injury cut short his outing, as well as significant portions of his 2007 and 2008 seasons. Hughes began 2009 in the minors but later returned to the major leagues, eventually converting to a relief pitcher in June; pitching as a setup man for Mariano Rivera, Hughes excelled in the new role during the regular season. Despite his struggles in the postseason, Hughes won a championship with the Yankees in the 2009 World Series.

Philip Heywood Hughes (born 17 June 1991) is an English cricketer. Hughes is a right-handed batsman who bowls right arm medium pace. He was born in Southampton, Hampshire. He was educated at The Romsey School and Peter Symonds College.

While studying for his degree at Cambridge University, Hughes made his first-class debut for Cambridge MCCU against Sussex in 2010. In that same season he played in the University Match between Cambridge University Cricket Club and Oxford University Cricket Club. During the 2011 season, he made three further first-class appearances for Cambridge MCCU, and once again appeared in that seasons University Match. Hughes has to date struggled against English first-class opponents, scoring 91 runs at an average of 15.16, with a high score of 32. For Cambridge University, he has scored 179 runs in his two University Matches at an average 44.75, with a high score of 87.

Phil Hughes (footballer, born 1964)

Philip Anthony "Phil" Hughes (born 19 November 1964) is a former Northern Ireland international footballer who played as a goalkeeper.

He left school in 1981 to sign for Manchester United as an apprentice, keeping goal as they finished FA Youth Cup runners-up in 1982, but leaving the following year without signing a professional contract. A two-year spell at Leeds United followed, after which he spent two years at Bury and four years at Wigan Athletic, before finishing his career in the mid-1990s with Scarborough. He earned three caps for the Northern Ireland national football team between 1986 and 1987, and was included in the 1986 FIFA World Cup team as a back-up goalkeeper. Since his retirement from professional football in 1992, Hughes has worked as a goalkeeping coach for a number of clubs. While playing part-time for Guiseley, he also worked as a policeman.

Club career

As a teenager, Hughes played for junior teams at Burnley during the school holidays. Hughes' senior career began when he was signed as an apprentice for the youth team at Manchester United in 1981 after leaving school. In the 1981–82 the youth side reached the final of the FA Youth Cup. Hughes started in goal in both legs of the tie but the team were defeated 6–7 on aggregate by Watford. Despite being a promising young goalkeeper, he failed to obtain a professional contract or make a first team appearance for the club and left in January 1983 to sign for Football League Second Division outfit Leeds United on a free transfer.
