Phantoms (novel)

Phantoms is a novel written by best-selling author Dean Koontz, first published in 1983. The story is a version of the now-debunkedurban legend involving a village mysteriously vanishing at Angikuni Lake.

Plot summary

Jenny and Lisa Paige, two sisters, return to Jenny's hometown of Snowfield, California, a small ski resort village nestled in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains where Jenny works as a doctor, and find no one alive. The few bodies they find are either mutilated, or reveal some strange form of death. Finally, after growing more alarmed by the town's mysterious and alarming situation Jenny manages to call police in a neighboring town to come help.

Together, the girls and the police, led by Sheriff Bryce Hammond, are able to request help from the military Biological Investigations Unit. The police managed to find only one clue as to what was causing the town's disappearances and deaths. A victim of whatever was trying to kill him managed to write the name Timothy Flyte on a mirror moments before he was killed. Flyte is a British academic and author of a book, The Ancient Enemy. His book catalogs and describes various mass vanishings of people in different parts of the world over the centuries.

Moon of Israel (novel)

Moon of Israel is a novel by Rider Haggard, first published in 1918 by John Murray. The novel narrates the events of the Biblical Exodus from Egypt told from the perspective of a scribe named Ana.

Haggard dedicated his novel to Sir Gaston Maspero, a distinguished Egyptologist and director of Cairo Museum.

Adaptation

His novel was the basis of a script by Ladislaus Vajda, for film-director Michael Curtiz in his 1924 Austrian epic known as Die Sklavenkönigin, or "Queen of the Slaves".

Phantom (Kamen Rider)

Phantoms (ファントム, Fantomu) are the fictional antagonists that appear in the 2012-2013 Kamen Rider Series Kamen Rider Wizard. Each Phantom has a form based on a monster from various mythologies, able to assume a human form modeled after their original human selves.

Background

Phantoms are born whenever humans with magic potential, known as Gates (ゲート, Gēto), give in to despair. From there, the created Phantom proceeds to tear down the host's Underworld (精神世界<アンダーワールド>, Andāwārudo), the subconscious of the human, before destroying the host itself. Able to assume its host's form, yet lacking few human aspects like sense of taste, a Phantom sometimes would fully assume its original self's identity until called to seek out a Gate and place that human deep in despair to repeat the cycle. A Kamen Rider can stop the emergence of Phantoms by using an Engage Wizard Ring to enter a Gate's underworld when it is being torn apart, and prevent Phantoms from destroying the host's Underworld by destroying the Phantoms from within, with the said host made a normal human afterwards. Their ultimate goal is gather enough numbers so their leader Wiseman can re-enact an unknown ritual known only as "The Sabbath". But in reality, the Phantoms are only a by-product of the Sabbath which is actually the siphoning of magical energies from Gates to infuse into a Philosopher's Stone.

Phantoms (film)

Phantoms is a 1998 American science fiction horror film adapted from Dean Koontz's 1983 novel of the same name. Directed by Joe Chappelle with a screenplay by Koontz, the film stars Peter O'Toole, Rose McGowan, Joanna Going, Liev Schreiber, Ben Affleck, Nicky Katt, and Clifton Powell. The film takes place in the peaceful town of Snowfield, Colorado, where something evil has wiped out the community. It is up to a group of people to stop it or at least get out of Snowfield alive.

Plot

Dr. Jennifer Pailey brings her sister Lisa to the resort town of Snowfield, Colorado, a small ski resort village nestled in the Rocky Mountains where Jenny works as a doctor. Once in town, the sisters find no one around but a few corpses. At first, their suspicions are that of a serial killer loose in town. After finding the severed heads of the town baker and his wife in an oven, the sisters are found by Sheriff Bryce Hammond, a former FBI agent haunted by the death of a boy he accidentally killed, and his deputies Stu Wargle and Steve Shanning who came to investigate the strange killings.
