Petr Barna (born 9 March 1966) is a Czech former competitive figure skater who competed for Czechoslovakia. He is the 1992 European champion, the 1992 Olympic bronze medalist, and a seven-time Czechoslovak national champion. He was the first man to land a quadruple jump in Olympic competition.
Barna was born 9 March 1966 in Prague. In 1990, he married ice dancer Andrea Juklová, with whom he has a daughter, Sofie Barnová, born in April 1992.
Barna started skating in Prague at an outdoor rink and received lessons from 1972. He began appearing at senior internationals in the 1982–83 season. He was coached by František Pechar.
Barna sprained his right ankle as he was leaving the airport in Birmingham on his way to the 1989 European Championships. Despite the injury, he medaled for the first time at an ISU Championship, winning bronze.
1991–92 was Barna's best competitive season. He won gold at the 1992 European Championships and a bronze medal at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. He became the first person to land a quad jump in Olympic competition, executing a quad toe loop in his free skate.
Bearna (anglicized as Barna) is a Gaeltacht village west of Galway city in County Galway, Ireland, on the R336 regional road. Once a satellite of Galway city, the village is now rapidly becoming one of its suburbs. Officially the village is regarded as Irish speaking and is therefore a constituent part of the regions of Ireland that make up the Gaeltacht. However, because of its absorption into the city, it has recently become a mainly English speaking village. Nonetheless, Irish is still the main language of its western and northern hinterland and the village has now effectively become the gateway to the largest Irish speaking region in the country, Connemara.
To try to control the major development which has been undertaken in recent years, a very strongly supported local action group has been set up (Pobal Bhearna). In 1976 a community development group called Comharchumann Bearna Teo was formed after five local men put up the purchase money for 2 acres (8,100 m2) at Troscaigh Thiar to be used for community purposes and has succeeded in developing several recreational facilities.
