Peter Woulfe (1727 – 1803) was an Irish chemist and mineralogist. He first had the idea that wolframite might contain a previously undiscovered element (tungsten).
In 1779, Woulfe reported the formation of a yellow dye when indigo was treated with nitric acid. Later it was discovered by others that he had formed picric acid, which eventually was used as the first synthetic dye, an explosive and an antiseptic treatment for burns.
Woulfe is credited with inventing the Woulfe Bottle, a kind of wash bottle with two or three necks.
Woulfe has been described as being as much an alchemist and mystic as a scientist. As recorded by John Timbs:
They hung a sign out, sign out after seven
Down at the hive where youre such a busy bee
So sign in honey, sign up for heaven
Just you tonight, its you and me
Chorus
Come as you are, now come on
Come as you are, and well have a ball
Aint gonna be no masquerade
Come as you are, or dont come at all
Therell be a high time, high time at the lakeside
Barry and the boys are going in for free
Well jump the moon, take it for a joyride
I stuck it up there for you and me
chorus
Im just a bluebird, bluebird at your window
And if you show, such a pretty sight to see
But like the dawn? I know what youre into
