Peter Steele

Petrus Thomas Ratajczyk (January 4, 1962 – April 14, 2010), better known by his stage name Peter Steele, was the lead singer, bassist and composer for the gothic metal band Type O Negative. Before forming Type O Negative, he had created the metal group Fallout and the thrash band Carnivore.

As the frontman for Type O Negative, Steele was known for his vampiric affect, towering stature, rich bass-baritone vocals and a dark, often self-deprecating sense of humor. "His lyrics were often intensely personal, dealing with subjects including love, loss and addiction." Steele credited Black Sabbath and The Beatles as his key musical inspirations.

Early life

Steele was born in Red Hook, Brooklyn into a Roman Catholic family and attended Edward R. Murrow High School located in the Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn. His father was of Russian and Polish descent, and his mother of Irish, Scottish, Norwegian and Icelandic heritage. He was raised in the Bensonhurst and Brighton Beach neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Steele was the youngest of six children, with five older sisters. His father fought in World War II and later worked at a shipyard. Steele started taking guitar lessons at age 12, moving on to bass six months later.

Peter Steele (poet)

Peter Daniel Steele AM (22 August 1939 – 27 June 2012) was an Australian poet and academic, who was awarded the Christopher Brennan Award, for lifetime achievement in poetry, in 2010.

Steele was educated at Christian Brothers' College, Perth; Loyola College, Melbourne; the University of Melbourne; Canisius College, Sydney and the Jesuit Theological College, Melbourne. He gained an MA and PhD from the University of Melbourne and joined the academic staff there in 1966. He later administered the Department of English and held a Personal Chair in English there; he went on to become Emeritus Professor of English at the university. He remained at the university until his death in 2012.

Steele was a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and a Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta, at Georgetown University and at Loyola University Chicago.

In 2012 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), for service to literature and higher education as a poet, author, scholar and teacher, and to the Catholic Church.
