Peter Faber

Saint Peter Faber, S.J. (French: Pierre Lefevre or Favre, Spanish: Pedro Fabro, Latin: Petrus Faver) (13 April 1506 – 1 August 1546) was the first Jesuit priest and theologian, who was also a co-founder of the Society of Jesus. Pope Francis announced his canonization on 17 December 2013.

Life

Early life

Faber was born in 1506 to a peasant family in the village of Villaret, in the Duchy of Savoy (now Saint-Jean-de-Sixt in the French Department of Haute-Savoie). As a boy, he was a shepherd in the high pastures of the French Alps. He had little education, but a remarkable memory; he could hear a sermon in the morning and then repeat it verbatim in the afternoon for his friends. Two of his uncles were Carthusian priors. At first, he was entrusted to the care of a priest at Thônes and later to a school in the neighboring village of La Roche-sur-Foron.

In 1525, Faber went to Paris to pursue his studies. He was admitted to the Collège Sainte-Barbe, the oldest school in the University of Paris, where he shared his lodgings with a Francis Xavier. There Faber's spiritual views began to develop, influenced by a combination of popular devotion, Christian humanism, and late medieval scholasticism. Faber and Xavier became close friends and both received the degree of Master of Arts on the same day in 1530. At the university, Faber also met Ignatius of Loyola and became one of his associates. He tutored Loyola in the philosophy of Aristotle, while Loyola tutored Faber in spiritual matters. Faber wrote of Loyola's counsel: "He gave me an understanding of my conscience and of the temptations and scruples I had had for so long without either understanding them or seeing the way by which I would be able to get peace..." Xavier, Faber, and Loyola all became roommates at the University of Paris and are all recognized by the Jesuits as founders of the Society of Jesus.

Peter Faber (born 9 October 1943, in Schwarzenbach an der Saale, Germany) is a Dutch stage, television and film actor.

Biography

Faber was born in Germany, to a set of parents who beat him regularly; he was rebellious from an early age. They moved to Amsterdam-Noord when he was six. His mother left with another man, and his father had to make do working whatever job was available. At sixteen, Faber left home and roamed around for a while.

Early career

Faber was co-founder of Het Werkteater and twice won a Louis d'Or for his roles in Het Koekoeksnest and Avondrood.

Television and film career

In the 80s Peter Faber starred as John Gisberts in Dutch box office hit Schatjes! and its sequel Mama is boos!. International audiences might know Faber from star-studded A Bridge Too Far or Paul Verhoeven's internationally successful war epic Soldier of Orange.

Later activities

Faber played in the musical De Jantjes (1998), as Captain Hook in the musical Peter Pan. In 2007 he performed in his one-manshow Caveman and in the children's show Elk kind is Kampioen!.

Peter Faber (telegraph specialist)

Peter Christian Frederik Faber (7 October 1810, Copenhagen – 25 April 1877) was a Danish telegraphy pioneer. In Denmark, he is remembered first and foremost for his songwriting. Faber was also an amateur photographer and is credited with the oldest photograph on record in Denmark.

Telegraphy

After graduating in technology in 1840, he became an inspector at the Polyteknisk Læreanstalt (College of Advanced Technology) where he carefully followed the development of electromagnetic telegraphy. Together with Hans Christian Ørsted he wrote a report on the possibility of laying telegraph lines in Denmark. When a line successfully connected Helsingør and Hamburg, he became the director responsible. Faber quickly replaced the underground cables with overhead wires, extending the telegraph network from 530 km to 2,800 km with 200 relay stations and over 300 employees.

Song writing

Faber wrote many songs, several of which have remained popular until today. They include Højt fra træets grønne top which is always sung around the family Christmas tree, and Dengang jeg drog af sted, written to celebrate the Danish victory at the 1848 Battle of Bov.
